Let’s talk about 10 of the most hated characters in the Gossip Girl fandom.
Some of these characters were around for most of the seasons and others weren’t, but all of them have one thing in common and it’s that the majority of viewers absolutely hate them.
Starting with Vanessa Abrams. I personally don’t have anything against Vanessa as a character, but I do understand why so many viewers of the show hated her.
So many red thoughts have been launched to bash Vanessa for being pretentious, judgmental, and super annoying with her hypocrisy.
She constantly judged upper EastSiders, yet she was always doing everything in her power to rub shoulders with people on the upper east side.
She judged Dan for associating with the wealthiest elites of New York City, yet she herself pursued a romantic relationship with nature, Archibald, and a casual friends with benefits connection with Chuck Bass.
The worst of all about Vanessa is that she became everything she hated in the end when she linked up with Juliet, Sharp and Johnny Humphrey to sabotage Serena.
It’s safe to say it’s understandable. Why so many people disapprove of her as a character.
Next is Agnes Andrews. For some reason, a lot of people leave Agnes off their list when they’re talking about the worst villains on Gossip Girl, but I definitely have to add her to this list because I think she was just the truest definition of scum of the Earth.
She was a terrible influence on Jenny the first time they connected, almost getting Jenny into a situation for a sleazy photo shoot where they we’re taking off their clothes.
They were supposed to go into business together as fashion, designer and model, but Agnes ended up lighting all of Jenny’s dresses on fire.
She was was diabolical. And Jenny should’ve learned her lesson the first time because for some reason, they reconnected in the future to become friends again.
And that was when Agnes drugged Jenny and set her up to get violated by a group of guys at a bachelor party.
This is actually one of the most evil despicable things a gospel character ever did. Unfortunately, Nate was there to rescue Jenny so that nothing bad happened to her.
Third is Trip van der Bilt. In my opinion, Trip isn’t hated enough. Trip deserves way more hate than he gets because he was truly the worst.
He cheated on his wife with Serena, tried to convince Serena to be his mistress, and then got into a car accident with Serena in the passengers seat.
His worst crime of all was moving Serena’s body to the driver’s seat and leaving her stranded there until the paramedics arrived. It’s almost as if he didn’t care if she lived or died.
It was completely sinister. Fortunately, Nate punched him in the face afterward.
The fact that their affair started when Serena was freshly 18 years old and he was fully married with a wife just makes him so much worse of a character.
He tried to come across as a charming man with good intentions to make positive changes in the political space, but what he was willing to do behind closed doors made him a terrible person.
Damien Dalgaard is next in line for his toxicity with Jenny. She desperately wanted to fit in on the Upper East Side, but she didn’t have the finances to make it happen.
So when Damien came along and encouraged her to start selling illegal substances with him, she gave into temptation and thought it was the smart thing to do.
And then to make matters worse, he tried to pressure her into swiping her V-card with him before she was ready.
Everything about this relationship was super toxic. At the time, Jenny had no self-love or self-respect, so she didn’t know that she should have higher expectations for a romantic partner.
She already felt like no one cared about her anyway, so being with Damien made a lot of sense to her at the time.
The problem with Damien is that the type of trouble he was getting Jenny into wasn’t just going to end in a typical heartbreak. It could’ve ended with Jenny behind bars.
Alison Humphrey is another SUPER hated Gossip Girl character. Although I noticed that she gets left out of a lot of conversations.
She shouldn’t be left out of conversations because she deserves all the hate she gets.
She abandoned, Dan and Jenny leaving them with serious mommy issues. she ran off with a new boyfriend in Hudson and left her kids feeling like they didn’t matter to her at all.
The consequence of Alison, leaving is what turned Rufus into such an overbearing and overly strict father with Jenny.
And because of that, it put a strain on his relationship with Jenny. Rufus and Jenny’s relationship got so bad that at one point, she was willing to file for emancipation to get away from him.
And all of that stems from the fact that Alison dipped out on the family.
The wounds of abandonment and Dan and Jenny are more abundantly clear when you rewatch the show.
You see that Dan is seeking love and validation in relationships, which is why he obsesses over Serena in early seasons of the show.
And you can see that Jenny is also seeking a feeling of warmth, comfort, and acceptance that she’s missing.
She looks in all the wrong places in her friendships, romantic relationships, and beyond.
Ivy Dickens is another character people love to hate on Gossip Girl for a multitude of reasons.
It’s easy to hate Ivy Dickens due to the fact that she hooked up with both Rufus Humphrey and William van der Woodsen, two men who were old enough to be her father.
Like she really hooked up with Dan‘s dad and Serena‘s dad and didn’t think twice about it.
When she was hooking up with Dan, she asked him to call her Serena right in the middle of it, which was super cringe.
It was a sign that her mental health was not in a good spot because she wanted to embody the energy of Serena who she was clearly very jealous of.
And then she tried to come after Lily, claiming that Lily was so mean to her and that Lily was ruining her life and trying to leave her with nothing.
But we have to remember that Ivy was hired as an actress to enter into the Van der Woodsen household, play a part, and swindle the family out of inheritance money.
It was never her money to begin with. Ivy was never a good person to begin with.
She played the part and grew close to Cece so that she DID end up inheriting money, even though she was not a blood related family member.
Another thing I really don’t like about the character of Ivy is what she did to her boyfriend in Los Angeles.
He clearly had deep feelings for her and really wanted to be with her, but she wanted to trade up in life which meant leaving him behind and abandoning him fully so that she could inherit luxury and wealth in New York City.
And on that note, fans also really hate William van der Woodsen. William doesn’t get as much attention regarding the hatred towards him since he was more present towards the end of the show.
But if he had been around longer in the show, there would certainly be more attention on him and the reasons why it’s so easy to hate him.
For starters, he abandoned Serena and Eric when they really needed a father figure the most.
Serena ended up, turning to promiscuity, underage, drinking, partying, and acting super rebellious all the time.
And Eric almost unalived himself because he was feeling so depressed, so isolated, and so alone.
We can pin all of us on William who wasn’t there for his kids. He failed as a father, and he was just overall a terrible person.
Which is why I’m still so pissed pissed off that the Gossip Girl writers decided to write him back into the show as being endgame with Lily.
Why did him and Lily get back together? It makes absolutely no sense at all.
I get that the writers didn’t want Lily and Rufus to be together since Serena and Dan, we’re going to end up together, but why did that have to be such a big deal?
Serena and Dan could’ve ended up together while Lily stayed with Rufus and that’s how it should’ve been.
But instead, they just needed Lily to end up with William for some bizarre reason even though William was a sleeper villain.
Let’s not forget that he pretended Lily had cancer longer than she did so that he could weasel his way back into her heart by spending more one on one time with her.
He believe that if he was in close proximity with her for a long time, that they would fall for each other again.
And it actually ended up working. It was so insane that the writers take this direction because William is a deplorable character.
Gabriel Edwards is next in line for being a trash character. I feel like a lot of people forget the impact of Gabriel and how much have he leaked in the show, but he truly reached havoc in ways that were not fixable.
He pretended to fall in love with Serena so he could weasel his way into her social circle and scam all of her wealthiest, friends and family out of their money.
But the worst part of this all is that he scammed Rufus Humphrey, who barely had any money to invest in the first place. He invested Dan and Jenny’s college funds and ended up losing everything.
So since he was with Lily at the time, Lily felt the need to step up and intervene by putting that money back into his account. And when Rufus found out she did that, he felt emasculated.
And that was sort of the beginning of the end for Rufus and Lily’s marriage. He started losing trust in her and he felt like he wasn’t a man who could be a provider.
And she was growing increasingly frustrated with him because he had made such a stupid business move, and he was always acting so prideful.
They tried not to make it a big deal that Lily was so much more financially well often than him, but after that incident with Gabriel happened, it became impossible to ignore that Rufus just couldn’t compete or compare with Lily financially.
All of that can be pinned on Gabriel. And then Gabriel had the audacity to say he actually developed real romantic feelings for Serena.
Please miss me with the bullshit. And btw… I hate Poppy Lifton just as much.
Lola Rhodes is another character who’s heavily hated in the Gossip Girl fandom, including me, because was such a snooze fest.
Even though she wasn’t on the show for very long, plenty of people on social media have made their complaints about her known.
She was very bland, dry, and boring. The introduction of her character was supposed to shake things up, but she didn’t really cause any movement.
Her relationship with Nate was uninspired, her rivalry with Serena was unforgettable, and really everything about her on the show just didn’t stand out.
The big reason Gossip Girl viewers obsess over the show is because of its shock value, and the fact that there are so many moments that have been seared into our brains that we will never be able to forget.
However, Lola never really brought the heat in that regard, which is why so many fans of the show hate her and feel like she was just a waste of space.
Bart Bass is obviously the 10th character on this list who is the most hated.
And for me personally, the biggest reason why is that he let Chuck spend so many years believing that truck had killed his own mother during childbirth.
Chuck lived with guilt and self-hatred because he thought that he ruined his own life in the process of being born. And Bart allowed him to believe that. It was super twisted and evil.
And then on top of that, Bart constantly made Chuck feel inadequate and inferior. Every time Chuck tried to step up and improve himself to his father, Bart was always reminding him of why he was a loser and a failure.
He was constantly beating Chuck down emotionally, making Chuck feel worthless, and causing Chuck to have lower self-esteem.
When he faked his own death, it send Chuck spiraling because he felt completely lost in life, believing that he was still a failure in his father‘s eyes, even though his father had “passed away.”
Then when he returned to Manhattan, he turned Chuck’s life upside down, leading to the most climatic moment of the show where he fought Chuck on the rooftop to the death.
There were a lot of villains on Gossip Girl like Juliet Sharp, Russell Thorpe, and Duchess Catherine Beaton, but none of these people were really as bad in my opinion compared to Bart Bass.
