Traveling to new places is supposed to be a fun and exciting experience for everyone. Unfortunately, people of color deal with the unfair disadvantages of racism. Black people aren’t welcomed with open arms everywhere they visit.

TikToker @Imanikmurray shared a video breaking down which countries she felt safest traveling to. Her video is now viral with over 450,000 likes from people who appreciate her willingness to share her personal experiences.

Hanoi, Vietnam – 10/10

TikToker @Imanikmurray ranked Hanoi, Vietnam a 10/10 for safety. She wrote, “Could live there. Walked alone at 2 am with AirPods in, no worries. Got stares, but they would smile when I looked at them and smiled. Got followed in one corner store, but so did every other non-Vietnamese person.”

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica – 10/10

She went in to rank Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica another 10/10. Her onscreen text said, “Friendly locals [who] are willing to help. Pretty empty at night and things close relatively early. Everyone says ‘pura vida’ and it makes you feel welcomed. Felt safe hitching a ride with our Airbnb host because we couldn’t get a taxi.”

Paris, France – 8.5/10

She gave Paris, France a rating of 8.5 out of 10. She explained, “The metro at night was a bit shady? Beng vigilant is key. Non-touristy areas felt safer than the touristy ones. Locals were very helpful with directions and even helped us get a taxi after the club. Service from waiters was 50/50. Accent is important.”

Beijing, China – 8/10

Her ranking of Beijing, China landed at an eight out of 10. The traveling TikToker wrote, “People touched my hair and took photos without asking. (More of an annoyance.) People gave me their BABIES to take photos with. Got invited by random families to dinner because I’m Black and speak Mandarin. Got in a fake taxi on my way home from the club and the driver tried to touch me. Speaking Mandarin gets you extremely far here. Stares are constant, but my friend with blonde hair and blue eyes also got stared at and her hair touched.”

Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE – 10/10

Dubai and Abu Dhabi, UAE got a perfect score of 10/10 from @Imanikmurray. She said, “Wearing another shorter than knee length got me a couple odd looks. Men called me BEAUTIFUL… No bad experiences, but also went during Ramadan.”

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt – 4/10

The lowest-scoring destination for @Imanikmurray happened to be Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. She gave it a four out of 10. Her reasons? She wrote, “Not a fan. It was literally all tourists from Europe. The resort workers from Cairo made us feel safe. Mom and I got a [threesome] offer from a group of Armenians? It was terrifying and wild. The Red Sea was pretty… go to Alexandra Hurghada instead. We got stared at literally every minute of our stay.”

Cairo, Egypt – 6/10

TikToker @Imanikmurray proceeded to rank Cairo, Egypt a six out of 10 next. She said, “Men had no boundaries and made constant advances, ‘Tips money’ is forever engrained in my mind. The history here is necessary to see! Worth at least one visit. Old and new Cairo are very different. Very busy and chaotic. Saw someone get whipped in the street before 11 am???”

Venice, Italy – 7.5/10

Venice, Italy pulled in a score of 7.5 out of 10 from this world traveler. She explained, “The stares from other Europeans made me iffy about this one. Walked the canals alone at night with AirPods in! Staff were very kind! Darker skin women will get more unwanted advances (saw it with my mom.) Rooms are small… here. Visit the other islands, don’t just see the one with Rialto. [I went] during COVID, s it was kinda empty-ish.”

Chiang Mai, Thailand – 10/10

Last but not least, @Imanikmurray rated her experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She gave it a perfect score saying, “Would and [want to] live here. Walked alone at 2 am daily. Very touristy during high season. Locals and tourists are kind and helpful. Honestly, felt most in my Black girl element here and Krabi, but here [definitely.} Very good vibes and amazing elephant sanctuaries. Do not ride elephants! Saw lots of other solo female travelers.”
