If you’re looking forward to traveling to plenty of new and exciting places in 2023, you’re not alone. Many people added travel plans to their vision boards for the new year with enthusiasm. At the end of the day, though, it’s important to be very careful of the places you choose to spend your time.

Your safety should always be your top priority. For these reasons, it isn’t the best idea to take trips to certain countries where you’d be putting yourself at risk. TikToker @donottravel came up with a concise list of places they urge everyone to avoid for now.

Haiti

According to @donottravel, Haiti is considered one of the places you should avoid traveling to in 2023. They note that kidnappings, various crimes, and civil unrest have become widespread throughout the country.

Venezuela

Crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure, and kidnappings are some of the reasons you should skip out on a trip to Venezuela. To make matters worse, their law enforcement officials are known for arresting and detaining American citizens without offering any guarantee of a fair trial.

Afghanistan

Terrorism, armed conflict, and kidnappings are some of the most alarming things happening in Afghanistan at the moment. @Donottravel advises against taking any trips there. Unfortunately, the risk of violence against American citizens is quite high.

North Korea

There’s an ongoing risk of long-term detentions for American citizens who travel to North Korea. For this daunting reason, it would be in your best interest not to go there. Unless your passport is especially validated, it wouldn’t be possible for you to travel there anyway.

Russia

Based on everything going on between Russia and Ukraine, it simply wouldn’t make sense to travel to Russia as an American citizen right now. If you get into any type of trouble while spending time in Russia as an American citizen, the US Embassy has little power when it comes to rescuing you.
