After starring as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s worldwide hit Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke has skyrocketed into fame as a household name. The 36-year-old actress is even in a secure enough position to turn down roles in well-known franchises – namely, Fifty Shades of Grey.
The book-turned-movie series details the erotic and romantic adventures of a young college girl, and reportedly was responsible for turning the public on (no pun intended) to the world of BDSM.

Clarke was offered the role of the naïve college student, Anastasia Steele, who famously learns the joys of BDSM through her whirlwind romance with brooding billionaire Christian Grey.
Though the role was undoubtedly a juicy one, Clarke turned it down. According to an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Clarke was tired of nude scenes.
She explained, “I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again.”
Still, the role interested her enough that she met twice with director Sam Taylor-Johnson before deciding to pass on it.
Dakota Johnson did an amazing job in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’
While undoubtedly Clarke would have done excellently with the role, Dakota Johnson was an excellent choice to star instead.
With her captivating blue eyes and down-to-earth mannerisms, Johnson perfectly conveys all the bookish, sweetly innocent charm of Anastasia.
The role was a breakthrough one: while Johnson had previously starred in small roles on The Office and canceled Fox series Ben and Kate, the role of Anastasia was what skyrocketed her to fame.
Johnson has since starred in the 2019 sleeper hit The Peanut Butter Falcon and is slated to play Madame Web in the upcoming Marvel film of the same name.
