Best friends growing apart is more common than you may assume. Best friends who are secretly jealous of you and your successes is an even bigger issue.
Do you have friends you feel haven’t truly been “there” for you lately? Although your friend might give the surface-level impression that they have your best interest at heart, do they actually like you as a person?
These are some warning signs to look out for if your “friend” is really hating on you without your knowledge. All of us should feel comfortable surrounding ourselves with people we trust… otherwise, it might be time to reevaluate our friendships.
Do you have an undercover hater pretending to be your friend?

- They deceive you
Example: It’s difficult to tell when your friend is being truthful with you. You may have caught them in a few tiny falsehoods, but all the lies add up to one enormous problem.
- Everything feels like a contest
Example: When you come to your buddy with some huge news, they always have to top it with something better that happened for them. That, or they constantly compare their lives to yours.
- They’re always making fun of you
Example: It’s not a big deal for friends to crack a few jokes about each other because you know it’s all in good fun. Yet, you’ve noticed jokes from one of your friends in particular always feel a little too harsh.
- They’re lying about you
Example: You’ve probably heard your friend say something negative about you behind your back. It’s even worse when the information you receive about yourself needs to be corrected.
- They’re very petty
Example: Your friend never passes up an opportunity to be petty. Nothing makes them happier than to be dramatic, childish, and difficult. There’s no need to wonder if their behavior is petty because the answer is always a resounding yes.
