Friendships are treasured relationships – if done right. Although there is no manual for people navigating this everchanging life, you’ll often know when a friendship is doing you more harm than good.

A healthy friendship is worth the ups and downs that come, but a toxic one has to go. Toxic friendships are characterized by people who have pessimistic approaches to everything that concerns you and your well-being.

Somehow, when it comes to them, they expect you to go to the end of the world and back. That said, here is how to let go of a toxic friendship.

Know that it is okay to move on from them

It will be difficult because this is someone you have spent years with, gone on trips and maybe even lived with at one point. But it is okay to let them go regardless of how long you have been friends with them.

Don’t be bitter about the break

Your peace matters above all else, and if you are friends with someone who doesn’t regard that, you should cut them off without a second of a doubt.

Allow yourself to move on

This involves less contact with them. Don’t call them, don’t text them, don’t wait around, and expect an apology.

This gives you room to breathe and become a healthier person without them in your life. It won’t be easy, but you’ll be better off.

Make sure to learn from the experience with your toxic friend so nothing similar happens again in the future.
