It’s obvious that The Weeknd‘s relationships with both Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid are done for good… but it’s still interesting to reflect back on how each relationship played out in front of the media.

The Weeknd and Bella dated off and on from 2015 until 2019. He dated Selena for 10 months in 2017.

He ended up releasing tons of songs about both brunette beauties after the respective relationships came to an end. But which relationship was actually better for him? Here’s a comparison and analysis.

Bella and The Weeknd met after he requested her modeling talents. He wanted her to pose for the cover of one of his albums and claimed that his initial motive was to work with her on a professional level.

They ended up hitting it off and sparking up relationship rumors at Coachella in 2015. Over the five years they spent together, they packed on the PDA wherever they went, posed for several loved-up social media selfies, celebrated birthdays together, and more.

There was no bad blood between the broken couple in 2016 during one of their breakup seasons while she walked the stage of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show with him performing right beside her.

Ultimately, they called it quits for good in 2019. Fans speculated that he played a voicemail recording of her voice during the outro of his song “Save Your Tears” on stage at Coachella in 2022. Full circle moment maybe?

Some of the songs he’s released that have lyrics likely directed toward Bella include “Too Late,” “Hardest to Love,” and “Escape From LA.”

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd’s relationship breakdown

Selena and The Weeknd dated for a much shorter time starting in January 2017. This was during his off season with Bella, and Selena’s off season from her relationship with Justin Bieber.

Over the course of 10 months, Selena and The Weeknd traveled to different places together across Europe, Canada, and South America.

Some of their trips were purely for lovey-dovey vacations while others were for his album tour. Rumors about the two musicians possibly working on a song collaboration together made their rounds during the spring, but nothing ever amounted from that.

When it came time for Selena to go through the process of her kidney transplant, The Weeknd rearranged his tour dates in order to accommodate her surgery schedule.

Unfortunately, they ended up breaking up not long after that. Some of the songs that have lyrics likely directed toward Selena include “Heartless,” “I Was Never There,” and “Call Out My Name.”

So, which relationship was better for The Weeknd?

The Weeknd’s relationship with Bella was ultimately better than his relationship with Selena. Reasons why?

  1. He dated Bella for a significantly longer amount of time than he dated Selena. 10 months versus five years (even though those years were off and on) is drastically different. He had more time to build and emotionally grow with Bella.
  2. Many people believe Selena was still emotionally invested in her relationship with Justin while she was dating The Weeknd. Bella, on the other hand, was solely focused on The Weeknd while she was with him.
  3. The song lyrics that are presumed to be about Bella seem to be filled with sentiments of longing, heartache, and desire. The song lyrics that are presumed to be about Selena are a lot colder and more resentful.
