Many artists will create a stage moniker to accompany their musical persona. It’s rare to see Hip Hop artists, in particular, use their real names during their musical careers.
Some say using a stage moniker allows them to garner more attention and become unforgettable to fans. Austin Richard Post, better known as Post Malone, is no exception to this rule. So, this leaves us wondering how he got his stage name.
Here’s why Austin Richard Post chose the name Post Malone
As complicated as it may seem to come up with a stage name, according to Post, it was pretty easy. In an interview he did on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he said, “I was like 14, and I had started getting into producing and rapping and singing over my own stuff. And I needed a name, you know, for my s—- mixtape.”
He continued, “So, I ran [my real name] through a random rap name generator… now I’m stuck with it.” This interview shot down the rumors that he had gotten his name from basketball player Carl Malone, who Post had named as one of his idols growing up.
In recent news, Post celebrated a significant milestone with Swae Lee from Rea Sremmurd. The duo’s single Sunflower from Post’s third album Hollywood Bleeding and soundtrack for Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse is now the highest certified single in RIAA history, going 17x –platinum.
In addition, the single’s video has racked up a whopping 2 billion views on YouTube. He also received a plaque for his singles “Congratulations” (14x-platinum), “Psycho” (10x-platinum), and his debut single “White Iverson” (10x-platinum). All this fantastic news came right before Post wrapped up the North American leg of his Twelve Carat Tour in Los Angeles on November 16th.
