Why would anyone willing avoid food for three days straight? I committed to a three-day fast recently, and here’s why.
- Autophagy. I learned about the body’s natural healing process that kicks in when you’re fasting.
When autophagy is in motion, our damaged/diseased cells get replaced by healthy cells. The anti-aging process also begins.
When you’re body isn’t busy worrying about digesting food, it can start going on the hunt for damaged/diseased cells.
2. Mental clarity. I learned that people who fast reach an unexplainable level of mental clarity. I heard it described as monk-level clarity.
Your anxious thoughts quiet down while you’re fasting. Your racing thoughts finally get silenced when there isn’t food in your digestive system.
With your sudden mental clarity, you can reach new spiritual levels by seeking answers from God and setting intentions as you manifest things.
3. Weight regulation. Fasting leads to ketosis, which causes weight loss.
People who cycle fasting days throughout the week or month can consistently keep weight off if they continue making healthy eating choices on days when they start eating again.
When you’re in ketosis, your body uses ketones as an energy source instead of glucose and carbohydrates. This energy source is as healthy and natural as it gets.

August 19 – 8 pm
My 72-hour fast has begun. I’m excited to get started on this journey so I can decipher whether or not this is something I’ll do on a consistent basis.
If I commit to this once a month or once every other month, it can potentially be life-changing for me.
August 20 – 2:30 pm
I’m 18.5 hours in and feeling good. No hunger pains or concerns. I believe my body has started autophagy, the process of my damaged cells being replaced by healthy cells.
My keto test strip turned light purple, which means I’m starting to re-enter ketosis as well. These are all good things. I’m excited to see how I feel at the end of 72 hours.
Aug 21 – 9 am
I’m 37 hours in and feeling okay. I stepped on the scale this morning and saw that my weight didn’t change at all.
I thought that was strange since everyone I see sharing videos about their three-day fasts drops at least a couple of pounds by day two.
I’m not ONLY doing this fast for weight loss purposes, but I’d still appreciate seeing some weight loss results.
Even without significant weight loss, I know I need to cleanse my body after eating unhealthy foods and drinking alcohol during my vacation last week.
Just knowing that I’m cleansing my body by doing this because I’m giving my insides the chance to start healing is enough motivation for me to keep going.
Falling asleep last night was a bit challenging, but once I fell asleep, I was asleep for the whole night. I have a slight headache this morning as well, but it’s not tragically painful or unbearable.
Aug 21 – 5 pm
I’m 45 hours in and five pounds down since my last weigh-in at 9 am THIS MORNING. I’m shook!
I could not believe the number on the scale dropped so drastically compared to where it was this morning. I feel okay!
I think seeing the scale drop has given me some serious energy. I exercised for a total of 30 minutes today after my 9 am weigh-in.
I kept the workout chill and low-key… it was a 20 minute outdoor walk at the Red Rock valley hiking trail and a 10 minute treadmill walk on a steep incline.
Food is something that has crossed my mind a handful of times so far today, but it hasn’t been to the point of me feeling like I NEED to chow down on something.
I still feel good! No more headaches today either, which is fab. I reached a point of clarity when discussing my traumas and phobias with a professional hypnotherapist today.
I realized something new about myself that my subconscious mind has kept suppressed for years. I have to believe this clarity came from fasting.
Now I’m excited to see if I uncover anymore insight tomorrow as I near the 72-hour mark. I have to start planning out what I want to eat first as I slowly incorporate food back in. I’ll be doing some research before the end of the day tomorrow.
Aug 22 – 11 am.
I’m 63 hours in on my three-day fast. It’s insane that I’m almost at the end and I still feel really good.
I pictured myself being ready to pass out from becoming so weak without food, but shockingly…. I’m chilling.
I lost another two pounds this morning, which is amazing. A total of seven pounds lost so far doing this cleanse.
I’m going to do another weigh-in at the end of the day for a final weight loss count. I spent more than an hour applying to jobs this morning.
I was so hyper-focused making it happen that I submitted about 15 applications to new jobs! Staying so vigilant while doing such a mundane task was definitely pretty cool.
I’m going to do some meditating now that I’ve reached day three, which is allegedly the day that provides the most mental clarity.
I’m also going to do a workout at HOTWORX to help flush my body of toxins.
Aug 22 – 8 pm
It’s been 72-hours, officially. My three-day fast is over. I lost a total of eight pounds.
I broke my fast with a Cobb salad and a glass of fresh-juiced watermelon that I diced and juiced myself.
I was only able to eat half the salad! I thought I’d be more ravenous for the food, but I’m just not.
I got full after only eating half and now I’m just kind of sleepy. Yes, I’m aware that this is WEIRD.
But when you fast long enough, your hunger signals get sort of muted. Anyway, I feel accomplished and proud of myself for making it happen.
This is definitely something I’ll be able to do again in the future. Maybe even once or twice a month.
