Australian-born singer Sia Furler began her career in the mid-1990s. She was in a group called Crisp, which didn’t garner any commercial success.

She left the group in early 2000 to start a solo career, and in doing so, she managed to release a relatively successful single entitled Taken for Granted.

In 2007 she had a major breakthrough with her album Lady Croissant, opening doors for her music to be featured on television shows and allowing her to collaborate with some of pop music’s brightest stars including Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Beyonce.

Her newfound popularity became too much for her, prompting her to take a break from superstardom in 2012.

She decided to return in 2014 with a new look that would include eccentric outfits and jagged hair with bangs covering most of her face.

This proved to be one of her most successful years. Her album 1000 Forms of Fear hit number one on the Billboard charts, with the song Chandelier being her lead single.  

Chandelier amassed a large amount of success due to its catchy chorus: “One, two, three, one, two, three drink, throw ’em’ back until I lose count…” but it still left a few fans wondering what the song lyrics really meant.

In an interview with Nightline, Sia credits her battle with depression and her addiction to alcohol and prescription medication as the catalyst for the dark lyrics in the song.

It references the life of the party girl who lives life and doesn’t think about the future.

Party girls drown their sorrows in drugs and alcohol, having regrets in the morning after. Sia wants listeners to know that it’s not good to envy their lives because besides beauty comes an empty dark individual with no real future.
