In a disturbing turn of events, Taylor Swift finds herself embroiled in a legal battle against a Toronto resident accused of creating and disseminating explicit AI-generated images of her.

Taylor is reportedly exploring legal avenues to address the reprehensible dissemination of deepfake images purportedly depicting her in compromising scenarios on X, formerly Twitter.

The alleged perpetrator, Zubear Abdi, stands at the center of the controversy. While the specifics of his involvement remain murky, the gravity of the situation has prompted Taylor’s fervent pursuit of justice.

This comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of AI-generated content without consent.

The situation escalated when X blocked searches for Taylor’s name following the circulation of the offensive images, prompting widespread condemnation.

X head of business operations Joe Benarroch said in a statement, “This is a temporary action and done with an abundance of caution as we prioritize safety on this issue.”

SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, joined the fray, urging lawmakers to pass legislation outlawing the creation and dissemination of such deepfakes.

“The development and dissemination of fake images — especially those of a lewd nature — without someone’s consent must be made illegal,” the statement said.

Strong condemnation

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also weighed in on the issue, describing the explicit AI-generated images as “alarming and terrible.”

The situation even escalated to the White House.

Asked if President Biden would support legislation making such AI-generated images illegal, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded.

“We are alarmed by the reports of the circulation of images that you just laid out… There should be legislation, obviously, to deal with this issue,” she said.

Sexually explicit deepfakes of Taylor went viral on X on Wednesday, Jan. 24, generating more than 27 million views in 19 hours, according to NBC News.
