Did you know that Lana Del Rey loooooves California? No? You didn’t?

Hard mode: We’re not going to include her single “California,” for rather obvious reasons!

The Mariner’s Village Apartment Homes

Let’s start with the most obvious reference in “Mariners Apartment Complex.” She sings, “You took my sadness out of context… At the Mariners Apartment Complex.”

The Mariners Village Apartment Complex in Marina Del Rey was particularly inspirational to her. When asked about this obvious reference, Lana related a heartbreaking story about someone she was dating and his friend who lived in these homes.

Hollywood

“Happiness is a Butterfly” makes a shout-out to Hollywood, as well as the Black Rabbit Rose speakeasy. She sings, “Hollywood and Vine, Black Rabbit in the alley. I just wanna hold you tight down the avenue.”

San Fernando Valley & Long Beach

In “Bartender”, she sings, “And I love the little games that we play. From the valley to the beach.”

The valley and the beach refer to the San Fernando Valley and the nearby Long Beach respectively.

Topanga Canyon

“The Next Best American Record” contains the lyrics. Lana sings, “Topanga’s hot tonight. I’m taking off my bathing suit.”

This points to the Topanga Canyon neighborhood near the Santa Monica mountains.
