Netflix recently made headlines when it quietly edited out a controversial moment from its highly anticipated special, The Roast of Tom Brady.
During the event, reality TV star Kim Kardashian faced a barrage of boos from the audience, which was promptly removed from the version available for streaming.
In the original livestream, the crowd’s reaction was palpable as Kim took the stage, causing host Kevin Hart to intervene in an attempt to restore order.
However, in the edited version now streaming on Netflix, the boos have vanished, along with Kevin’s efforts to quell the unrest.
Kim, undeterred by the rocky start, delivered a series of jokes aimed at Brady and even took playful jabs at Kevin himself.
“People make fun of your height, but what they don’t know is you’re also pretty mean,” she said. “Which makes you the smallest Black dick I’ve ever seen.”
Kim’s reaction to the crowd’s boos
Despite the initial turbulence, she managed to win over the audience with her witty remarks, earning raucous applause for her comedic prowess.
“I do know it would never work out (between Tom and herself). An ex-athlete, high cheekbones, silky hair — you remind me too much of my stepdad,” she said, referencing Caitlyn Jenner.
The decision to edit out the booing sparked speculation and debate among viewers, prompting Netflix to address the controversy.
Robbie Praw, Netflix’s vice president of stand-up and comedy formats, shed light on the decision, emphasizing that post-edits are standard practice for comedy specials.
However, he clarified that Kim did not request the removal of the boos, indicating that the decision was made independently by Netflix.
The Roast of Tom Brady proved to be a resounding success, drawing over 2 million viewers and generating significant buzz during Netflix’s Is a Joke comedy festival.
