Wednesday on Netflix has been a charming delight for people who enjoy dark comedy.
According to Jenna, this role is something extremely special to her. Playing Wednesday has become something she’s deeply connected to.
She told Variety that she battled it out against the director of the show to fight for different nuances and performance results.
Jenna‘s goal has always been for Wednesday to be believable and more three-dimensional.
She never wanted to play Wednesday if the character was going to refrain from achieving character development and stay monotonous from start to finish.
Jenna outright said, “There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I’d have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.”
A few examples include Jenna‘s refusal to say a line about wearing a dress to a high school dance and Wednesday’s involvement in a messy love triangle.
Jenna said, “I grew very, very protective of her. You can’t lead a story and have no emotional arc because then it’s boring and nobody likes you. When you are little and say very morbid, offensive stuff, it’s funny and endearing. But then you become a teenager and it’s nasty and you know it. There’s less of an excuse.”
It’s a good thing Jenna has been putting her foot down as a way of preserving the proper energy and vibe of Wednesday as a beloved fictional character.
