When Zendaya did a clean sweep of her entire Instagram following list before the premiere of Challengers in theaters, one person who also got unfollowed among the rest happened to be her long-time boyfriend, Tom Holland.
She didn’t just unfollowed Tom, though. She literally unfollowed everyone!
As of now, Zendaya has 183 million followers keeping up with her, but she isn’t following a single soul in return.
People on social media are in an uproar over the situation since some are convinced she should have opted to continue following Tom with their romance that’s almost lasted for a decade under their belt.
Here’s what everyone is saying.
One person who doesn’t think Zendaya’s decision to unfollow Tom was a big deal wrote, “I assume like most major celebs, she has a finsta and has simply decided to turn this account into strictly business, fashion, and PR.”
Someone else added, ”I mean my heart dropped to the floor for a minute that she would unfollow Tom. I’m way too invested in that relationship. But oh, she unfollowed everyone? Yeah, this is a workflow management strategy, that’s it.”
Someone else wrote, “Who even notices these things?”
Another person clapped back with, “Anyone who is a true fan of Zendaya would notice this. People have been privy to her relationship with Tom for years. Seeing that she unfollowed him was obviously going to get a reaction!“
Another person wrote, “She’s simply following in Taylor Swift’s footsteps. No big deal.”
As a reminder, Taylor isn’t following anyone on Instagram, but she does have 283 million people following her! Taylor’s been dating Travis Kelce, but even he didn’t earn a follow from the “Blank Space” songstress.
The user went to say, “Feels like a smart move for all celebrities who don’t really manage their own public-facing Instagram accounts at all. Then they don’t caught up in having to follow people back or people analyzing who they follow and such. I feel like this move only works for super top tier celebs.”
It’s unclear whether or not Zendaya runs her own social media profiles or if she hires a team of individuals to do that for her.
Someone else join the conversation to say, “I highly doubt she unfollowed Tom for any reason aside from being tired of Instagram. think she’s over it. She hasn’t been consistent on IG for months.”
Another person added, “Lots of celebs do this. It saves on drama when people are tracking your follows and unfollows. I doubt it means anything against her relationship with Tom.”
There are also people bringing up Beyonce in comparison. Beyonce currently has 317 million followers on Instagram and she follows one person: her husband, Jay Z.
That being said, Beyonce probably wouldn’t have given Jay a follow if he was just her boyfriend.
Jay is her whole husband!
If Tom ever pops the question to Zendaya and they make it down the aisle, there’s a chance he’ll end up snagging a follow from Zendaya after becoming her official husband as well.
There’s a seriousness that comes along with marriage that relationships stuck at boyfriend/girlfriend status will simply never obtain.
