Whenever Maisie Williams showed up on screen as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, viewers knew a badass moment was about to happen.
Arya was always showing up and showing out to seek revenge based on all of the heartache and suffering she was forced to endure at a young age.
Maisie did an excellent job taking on the epic and iconic role of Arya, but did she ever feel truly connected to the role? Here’s what you should know.
The truth about how Maisie Williams feels about Arya Stark.
While Maisie was filming Game of Thrones, she had to continue portraying a character who was much younger than she was in the real world.
The way she was dressed and the way she appeared on screen didn’t exactly match up to who she was in the real world.
She opened up about that discomfort with GQ UK saying, ”I think that when I started becoming a woman, I resented Arya because I couldn’t express who I was becoming. And then I also resented my body, because it wasn’t aligned with the piece of me that the world celebrated.”
As a reminder, she was cast as Arya when she was only 12 years old and she continued filming the show for eight full seasons.
Unfortunately, playing a boyish character like Arya didn’t come at a great time for Maisie who wanted to enjoy the excitement that comes along with growing up and becoming a woman.
She went on to say, “Around season 2 or 3, my body started to mature and I started to become a woman. But Arya was still very much like trying to be disguised as a boy.”
The feeling Mase described in an interview doesn’t sound like an easy thing for anyone to get through.
According to NME, Maisie also wanted to see Arya kill Cersei Lannister, and she felt a little disappointed that it didn’t happen.
Maisie said it would’ve been great if Arya got to end Cersei’s life, even if it meant that Arya died in the process.
Anyone who’s seen Game of Thrones knows that unfortunately, Cersei ended up getting a very underwhelming death scene, even though viewers were hoping for something a little more fiery and wild.
Based on everything Maisie’s publicly said about playing Arya, it doesn’t sound like she has the best connection to the character.
That doesn’t mean she regrets her time starring in the show altogether or anything like that, though.
According to Daily Express, she opened up about the deep gratitude she has for snagging her coveted role on such a popular show in the first place.
