Diehard fans of House of the Dragon aren’t exactly impressed by one romantic pairing in particular.
There aren’t many viewers who are pleased by the connection between Alicent Hightower and Criston Cole.
As a reminder, Criston used to be in love with Rhaenyra Targaryen, but she wasn’t interested in more than a one-night stand with him.
Here’s what social media users are saying online about Alicent and Cole.
One fan of the show wrote, “Alicent and Cole. We need to talk about this. Am I the only one who thinks giving them a sexual relationship seems kinda off both for the story and for the characters? Like I get it if there was a sexual tension between them, but it just seems so out of character for them both to be doing this.”
Another fan added, “I love Team Green but Alicent and Cole’s sexual relationship did butcher their characters for me. There was no build-up to this or relationship development. I hate this change so much.”
A third fan wrote, “Yeah, I don’t get it. Especially cause Cole is still so butt hurt over Rhaenyra turning him down when she was 14.”
Someone who doesn’t feel like Criston and Alicent‘s relationship is the worst thing ever joined the conversation to say, “I think it can be a fascinating plot line as long as it doesn’t fall into a ‘these characters love each other’ direction. Alicent is so used to being used by the men in her life, as terrible as the post nut clarity makes her feel, I’m sure there’s a tiny part of her that thinks this release feels like the most alive she’s been. She’s a complicated character so I would I hate for this relationship to be painted as a teenage romance.”
Someone else making guesses about why the writers decided to create a sexual relationship storyline between Criston and Alicent added, “They determined their sex life would give people another reason to hate Criston, and honestly, they’re probably right.”
Another viewer who feels like Criston and Alicent‘s storyline could’ve turned out better chimed in with, “The problem isn’t that they were having sex, the problem is, as usual, the writers rushed through things without providing any build-up.”
Ultimately, a lot of people on social media just aren’t invested in the love story between Alicent and Criston for a slew of reasons.
Criston’s hatred and lingering feelings for Rhaenyra, plus the lack of relationship tension buildup between him and Alicent are two of the biggest reasons why.
