It’s time to do a deep dive into Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato’s friendship. Are they still friends today?

Once upon a time, they used to be so close!

Here’s an update on where they stand in 2024.

Selena and Demi met on a set of Barney and Friends in 2002. That show was a great meeting point for the talented starlets since they both grew up to become super well-known and talented icons in the entertainment industry.

The last public statement one of them made about the other wasn’t a good one.

According to Harper‘s Bazaar, Demi outright said, “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her. I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

Since then, Demi hasn’t come forward to say anything else about Selena and Selena hasn’t responded to that Harper’s Bazaar statement.

Years later, and the loss of their friendship has people wondering what could have gone wrong between them when they were super public about their closeness.

The first rumors about a feud between Selena and Demi started swirling back in 2010 around the time that Selena started up a friendship with Taylor Swift.

Between 2010 and 2015, it seemed that their friendship was hot and cold. Then, in 2014, Demi unfollowed Selena on Instagram.

A few years later in 2017, Demi praised Selena by calling her a “strong woman” according to People Magazine regarding Selena‘s lupus diagnosis and kidney transplant surgery.

While it’s pretty clear Selena and Demi are definitely not as close as they once were, it’s also pretty obvi they don’t seem interested in rekindling the fire of their former friendship either.

Selena is still friends with Taylor and she’s currently in a relationship with Benny Blanco.

Demi, on the other hand, is in a committed relationship with Jordan Lutes.

Based on what Demi said to Harper’s Bazaar, it sounds like a case of two childhood friends who simply outgrew each other.

Anyone who grew up watching Disney Channel back in the day grew comfortable and familiar seeing Selena and Demi on their respective Disney Channel shows, Wizards of Waverly Place and Sonny With a Chance.

Knowing that the friendship they once shared on Disney Channel has fizzled into memories of the past is a bit heartbreaking for tons of young millennials and older Gen-Z-ers.

Friendship is a big deal to Selena and it’s not something she takes lightly.

According to Pop Sugar, she once said, “You are who you surround yourself with. I know that’s such a cliché quote, but it’s true.”
