Does Selena Gomez know how to speak the beautiful language of Spanish fluently?
We’ve got your deep dive into the truth about Selena and her connection to the Latin language.
Selena Gomez & the Spanish language
The truth of the matter is that Selena isn’t 100% fluent in Spanish. She does know how to speak and sing a lot of words in the beautiful Latin language, though.
Now that Selena is starring in a Spanish-speaking movie called Emilia Perez, it has fans curious to know more about her deeper connection to Spanish as a communicator.
Emilia Perez is a comedy-drama-musical that has just about everybody talking.
The fact that Selena is playing one of the leading roles in the movie is a huge reason why people are so interested.
Unless you’re a native Spanish speaker yourself, you won’t understand a word being said in the movie without the proper subtitles turned on, by the way!
The movie already has a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means people definitely enjoy the storyline.
What about Selena’s Spanish songs, though?
She has a list of Spanish bangers any music lover would love.
“Un Año Sin Lluvia,” “Dices,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Más,” and “Taki Taki” are all worth streaming on Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music if you’re curious.
Spanish used to be a bigger part of Selena’s life when she was much younger.
According to the LA Times, she stated, “I was fluent in Spanish until I started working at seven. Then my job just kinda took over my life.”
Since she started working in the entertainment industry at such young age, she was constantly memorizing scripts in English all the time.
Reading, talking, and perfectly pronouncing words in English for so many years likely washed out some of the fluency in Spanish she had when she was little.
As far as Selena’s ethnicity goes, her father is of Mexican descent and her mother is of Italian ancestry.
Her parents named her after Selena Quintanilla, who was unjustly murdered in 1995.
The fact that Selena’s parents named her after such an icon might be part of the reason why she was set up to have such a successful career and life.
Whether Selena is speaking or singing in Spanish, her fans go crazy for her with endless love and support.
If Selena wasn’t so heavily adored, there would be no way she could attract more than 425 million followers on Instagram.
Her Instagram following alone says a lot about the status of her success across North America and Latin America.
What do you think of Selena when it comes to the Spanish language? Do you hope that she returns to the fluency level she had as a child someday? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
