By the time she was being written off the show, she was more of a villain than anything else.
Diehard fans of Gossip Girl are weighing in trying to decipher why exactly the downfall of Jenny happened on Gossip Girl in the first place – and was it really necessary?
The downfall of Jenny
One social media user asked, “Why was the downfall of Jenny necessary? I’m rewatching Gossip Girl and in Season One, Jenny has so much potential. She could’ve been the next generation’s Queen Bee. A mix of Blair’s no-nonsense behavior and the flowy appeal of Serena without being such an airhead. Jenny’s character was butchered, but why?”
Someone responded by saying “I think that’s a great question. Even though Taylor Momsen eventually left the show, they could have written Jenny off in a different way without destroying her character.”
Another fan added, “Yep. She could have had great fashion opportunities with less bad drama. There is enough potential drama without character assassination.”
Someone else wrote, “I was kind of thinking the same thing! It would have been cool to have Jenny end up really focusing on her budding career!
Another fan chimed in with, “That would’ve been perfect. especially since the books had a spin-off series all about Jenny.”

They were petty and took it out on the character. Everyone on the show said she was a nightmare to work with, even guest stars would talk about it.”

You can’t. That’s why all of the main characters date within the group, that’s why there’s no new blood. Or if there is, they don’t last. This is what Dan’s entire goal with being Gossip Girl is, to make his way into the circle.”
Overall, the narrative about whether or not Jen’s downfall was necessary is pretty divided among fans of the show.
Some feel that it added a lot of depth and intrigue to the show.
Others feel like it shouldn’t have happened because they wanted Jenny to end the show the way she started. As a sweet and pretty girl with a passion for fashion.
The idea that Jenny’s character could have turned into a perfect combination of Blair and Serena might have been an awesome route to take. But at this juncture, we will never know what could have been since the show is long over.
