Unrealistic beauty standards have always been a hot button topic in the entertainment industry.

Selena Gomez is the latest celeb to speak out on the matter.

Her words were deep and thought-provoking as she reflected on the way unrealistic beauty standards have negatively impacted our modern era.

While speaking at the Time 100 Summit in New York City, she said, “Personally, I felt that there’s a very unrealistic standard when it comes to the cosmetic world and it makes me a little sad for my generation.”

Selena is a Millennial since she’s currently 32 years old, but her words ring true for the generations above and below her as well.

Especially Gen-Z, who is currently 15 to 27 years old.

Here is what social media users are saying about Selena’s statement:

“I agree that beauty standards have been unrealistic for a while, but they’re getting worse now. Like, many celebrities going for the same look. Especially when you compare red carpet photos of celebrities from the 2000s vs now, everything is over the top smooth and filtered out today.”

“The individuality is gone. It’s all about the uncanny valley Instagram face and veneers so white they glow in the dark.”

“Don’t forget the button nose. Everyone basically looks like a Madison Beer replica, and even Megan Fox, who was seen as peak beautiful in the early 2010s, is constant with plastic surgery because it doesn’t seem to be ‘enough.’”

“Not to mention how much more extreme and accessible it is to make those changes. Going under the knife is so casual now. And it’s also the only way all those celebs look the way they do. And they often lie about it. And it is shoved in your face so much more than it used to be.”

“Selena’s not wrong. I’d say most girls are no longer allowed to have an awkward stage. They are expected to have the perfect hair, makeup, and clothes way earlier than I remember for myself.”

“There’s always been an unrealistic standard in beauty products. It’s how advertising and marketing work, to pry you from your money. Technically nobody needs a fraction of what we buy.”

“I feel like it’s worse now than in the 90s. If you look at pictures from the 90s, even celebs at least look like real people. Now everyone has the exact same face.”

While there are definitely tons of social media users who agree with Selena’s message, there are also several people who don’t feel like she’s the right person to deliver such a message since she owns a multimillion-dollar cosmetic line called Rare Beauty.

One of the reasons Selena is indeed qualified to speak on unrealistic beauty standards is that she launched Rare Beauty to help cultivate a sense of self-love and self-acceptance around the globe.

Even the bio of Rare Beauty’s official Instagram page explains her motive. It says, “Made to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique. 1% of all sales go to support mental health.”

Plus, Selena often shares pics of herself that are totally unedited without filters exposing acne and other flaws. Her realness is undeniable.
