Selena Gomez admitted that she’s struggled with social media addition, but she’s definitely not the only person in the world to deal with this difficult problem.
When Selena opened up about struggling with social media addiction during an interview with Vogue, she revealed a side of herself that wasn’t totally rare or unheard of in society.
In 2017, she told Vogue, “As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out. It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like shiz when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”
Over the years, Selena has taken many breaks from social media as a way of protecting her mental health. It turns out that tons of normal everyday people struggle with the same exact problem, according to Heepsy
They just revealed the top 10 countries where people are spending around eight hours a day using the Internet on average.
These numbers are a bit staggering, so brace yourself.
Malaysia comes in 10th place, followed by Mexico in ninth place. Chile comes in eighth place followed by Saudi Arabia in seventh place.
South Africa comes in sixth place, followed by Indonesia in fifth place. India comes in fourth place followed by the United States in third place.
United Arab Emirates comes in second place, and China comes in first place.
China has more social media users than any other country with a higher social media engagement index as well.
Social media addiction is a very real thing that many people in different countries are obviously struggling with.
The desire to feel connected is real. The fear of missing out when it comes to posting content or seeing other people’s content is also very real as well.
Selena further opened up about the challenges of social media usage with Business of Fashion saying, “I see a disconnect from real life connections to people, and that makes me a little worried. I do think social media is an amazing way to stay connected, to learn more things about what’s going on outside your little bubble, but sometimes I think it’s too much information.”
