First coming into prominence as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, actress Emilia Clarke went from nobody to a name on everyone’s lips.
Despite the iconic character being only her third on-screen professional role, Emilia managed to take the world by storm with her combination of incredible acting skills and subtle beauty.
But though it’s undeniable her fierce on-screen presence is what garnered her worldwide attention, there’s a subtle detail about her appearance that most miss – and yet it undoubtedly helps her maintain her eye-riveted persona.
Here’s why Emilia Clarke’s eyes are so interesting
Emilia has a condition known as heterochromia: a condition in which one’s eyes have more than one color to them. According to WebMD, heterochromia is a harmless biological quirk that doesn’t affect one’s vision.
While there are three different kinds, Emilia has central heterochromia: “the outer ring of your iris is a different color from the rest.”
In Emilia’s case, this means while the outer edges of her irises are blue, the inner are green – which makes her eyes all the more intriguing and appealing to mainstream audiences.
Interestingly, her most famous role also has unusual eyes. In the book series A Song Of Ice and Fire, which Game of Thrones is based on, the character of Daenerys Targaryen is meant to have purple eyes, symbolizing the long line of nobles that she’d come from.
While purple contacts or extensive CGI weren’t in the cards for the series, showrunners still managed to get an unusual and vivaciously attractive set of eyes in one of their most famous characters.
