Tom Glynn-Carney plays Aegon Targaryen on House of the Dragon, but how exactly does he feel about the troublesome character?
Aegon does NOT have a good reputation and most viewers can agree that he is a real piece of work.
Here’s what Tom has had to say about his experience playing a character like Aegon on one of the world’s most popular TV shows.
Tom Glynn-Carney’s thoughts about Aegon Targaryen

When Deadline asked Tom how it felt to play character who was so unlikable, Tom responded by saying, “I think it’s great playing someone like Aegon because he’s so unpredictable. He’s so volatile. He’s not just someone who people don’t like. He’s a tragic case. He’s a complete and utter tragedy of a person, and I feel deeply, deeply sorry for him. And I guess that’s kind of why I’ve wanted to investigate his vulnerabilities, his fragilities and his boyishness, all the things that he lacks in his life that kind of inform his decisions, that have given him a certain reputation. There’s a lot to unpack in him. He’s way more layered and complex than just an unlikable character.”
There’s obviously a lot of depth to Aegon that certainly needs to be analyzed further. As of now, the king has been burnt to a crisp by dragon fire from his own brother, Aemond.
Aegon had no clue that his own brother was going to turn on him so drastically because he felt like their boyish back-and-forth banter was silly and playful.
He didn’t realize his bullying tactics were having such a lasting and negative impact on Aemond.
Tom further described the loneliness of Aegon with The Hollywood Reporter saying, “It’s desperately, desperately sad. Aegon is a boy in a man’s body and all he’s ever wanted is to be shown love and made to feel seen or not judged. All these things that he’s done in the past that have given him a reputation, I believe he’s felt that any attention is good attention. Unfortunately, he’s made a name for himself now, people kind of want to keep their distance and they see him as a poisoned chalice.”
Now that Aegon has been crippled by dragon fire, he’s somewhat of a shell of his former self. He used to sleep with prostitutes, drink liquor, and do whatever he wanted freely. Now, he’s in constant chronic pain, which is something he never expected would happen.
Ultimately, it’s great to hear Tom’s opinions on the fictional character he plays on House of the Dragon.
Viewers must remember to separate the actor from the role since Tom is obviously nothing like the character he plays on screen.
Fans share their opinions about Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen
Avid HoTD viewers have much to say about Tom and the way he portrays Aegon onscreen.
In fact, several Reddit threads have been launched to discuss the topic. Here’s what some fans have said publicly to praise Tom and his skill set:
- “Shoutout to Tom Glynn-Carney who was absolutely brilliant as Aegon Targaryen this entire season. Give him all of the awards.”
- “Honestly looking back, I think TGC’s charisma single-handedly made this character compelling. Every scene written about Aegon was designed to demean and degrade the character, but Tom’s charisma made the character fun and likable.”
- “Aegon might not be the realms delight but he was the show’s delight so props to the actor for making it work. I am even shocked with how biased these writers are that this actor managed to bring so humanity to Aegon. Every scene has been about humiliating or degrading Aegon. One thing good thing about his character, his beautiful dragon and we see that dragon right before he gets maimed forever. You got to see Aegon’s happiness and rage to his cruelty and compassion when he wanted to return the shepherd’s sheep. He was an absolute treat to watch despite the obvious bias from the writers.”
- “Tom as Aegon was the best part of the second season. I hope Tom has the brightest career from here.”
- “I’m so happy that he is being praised everywhere by the fandom. Aegon is a very tough character to portray on screen, and he is doing wonderfully. The fact that most people can feel bad for Aegon is a great testament to his acting abilities. People should watch also his other work, Tom is very talented. There is even a BBC TV show with him.”
Will Tom return as Aegon for Season 3 of House of the Dragon?
If you’ve been having concerns about the future of Aegon on the show following his devastating dragon burn, we have some peace of mind to bring you.
According to CBS Mornings, Tom has been open and honest about what fans can expect from the character he plays once Season 3 rolls around – which means he’s definitely going to be in Season 3!
Tom said, “He’s on a new chapter. I think he’s a way more focused, driven version of Aegon that we’ve seen. I haven’t yet read the season 3 scripts, so it’s difficult to say what the writers have discussed, what they’ve decided on. I’m assured there’s a lot to come. I’ve had a little chat about the arc and how excited I should be about taking it on. I think we’ll see a different version of him, which is quite exciting.”
Based on what happens in the book series, there’s a bit of a question mark revolving around what’s expected for Aegon’s character in the future.
In other words, there doesn’t seem to be too much written information or details about Aegon‘s future moving forward.
We do know eventually he returns to Dragonstone, but since there isn’t much to reflect on in the books, the show writers have a lot of leeway to take his character in a multitude of directions.
Will they continue to make him lovable in the eyes of viewers or grant him a worse fate? Only time will tell!
