AI has made online dating apps like Tinder and Bumble more challenging.

No matter how real and authentic someone might seem, you never know who’s truly on the other side of the screen.

The term catfishing has been around for decades. It’s a problem that has become worse as technology has advanced.

Emisil recently conducted a study to find the worst states for catfishing victims.

If you live in any of these 10 states and find yourself on a dating app, make sure you check twice with the person and confirm they are who they say they are.

This study was done by Emisil by researching the number of catfishing victims per 100K, the number of romance scam reports, the total amount of money lost to romance scams, and the total number of various catfishing related searches, such as “How to know if I am being catfished.”

It shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that California is rated as the worst state for catfishing victims.

Florida comes in second place as the worst for catfishing victims.

Nevada is third, thanks in large part to Las Vegas and the various shenanigans folks from around the world get into when they visit Sin City.

Fourth is Arizona with Washington rounding out the top five. Check out the rest of Emisil’s list below for the rest of the top 10.
