New research has revealed where Americans are most eager to spend their summer this year, revealing Las Vegas to be the most searched for destination.

The study, conducted by online marketplace for timeshares, SellMyTimeshareNow.com, looked at average monthly search volumes to determine the top worldwide locations Americans are hoping to visit this summer. Keywords and phrases included ‘[location] hotels’, ‘[location] summer vacation’ and ‘flights to [location]’.

The study revealed that Las Vegas is the dream summer vacation this year, with an average of 1.2 million monthly searches – an incredible 151% more searches than the second most popular city. According to the latest data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, so far there have been an average of 3.34 million visitors between January and April, with this figure likely to go up over the next few months.

The city is known for its exciting attractions, such as the famous Las Vegas strip alongside sights like the Fountains of Bellagio. Alongside this, the surrounding desert is also home to many hiking trails and regions such as the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Another in-demand region, New York City, comes in second place with over 485,300 average monthly searches for flights, hotels, and vacations. The five boroughs of the region prove incredibly popular each year, with the New York City Tourism and Conventions Board anticipating approximately 64.1 million visitors in 2025.

Visitors can find a wide variety of activities to participate in, ranging from making the trek to the top of the Empire State Building, to visiting the latest shows on Broadway or sightseeing landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty. New York City’s tourism industry has a $74 billion economic impact, proving immensely popular.

The third most popular destination is New Orleans. Louisiana’s most populated city in the state draws in around 337,600 average monthly Google searches related to visiting. Three states, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana itself, have the city as their number one destination.

Tourists here can participate in the city’s famous music and food culture. Pre-pandemic, the region welcomed over 18 million visitors, with the tourism industry making over $1 billion each year.

Ranking as fourth most popular, and the first non-US location, is England’s capital, London. London amasses over 294,600 average monthly searches, which is no surprise with the variety the city has to offer. London is home to four UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the iconic Tower of London, alongside 11 national museums to explore.

Coming next, ranking as fifth most searched is the home of the iconic Eiffel Tower, Paris. The French capital amasses 256,000 average monthly Google searches, with it appearing in 23 states’ top five destinations. Residents in Nevada and Massachusetts are most eager to visit, with both areas having the city as their second most searched for destination, the highest position it sits on the list.

Tokyo ranks as the sixth most dreamt about vacation destination, with over 212,600 average monthly searches. Tokyo’s biggest fan is Hawaii, with the city ranking as the second most popular vacation destination there.

In seventh place is Los Angeles, where each month there are just over 196,800 average Google searches. The city’s highest position is in third place and features in this position across three states’ lists – Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

Hawaii ranks as the eighth most popular dream destination, with 192,700 average monthly searches. Hawaii’s tourism industry is known to be booming, with pre-pandemic data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority stating that on any given day there were 249,000 visitors to the islands. The highest position it ranked was as four states’ second most popular vacation location.

Over the border, Vancouver was revealed as the ninth most sought-after break, with 145,400 average monthly searches. Perhaps unsurprising given their proximity, Vancouver ranked highest with residents in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington where it placed as the second most popular location for trips.

Rounding off the list, Rome is America’s tenth most dreamt about destination. The Italian capital gains roughly 136,500 average Google searches a month, making it one of three European locations on the list.

Commenting on the findings, an expert from SellMyTimeshareNow.com said: “As summer comes around, friends, families and couples look forward to a vacation where they can either sit back and relax or get around to all the exciting plans they have been thinking about for months, maybe even years.

“It is interesting to note the lower numbers of international dream destinations, especially with the three most popular travel spots being within the US. The biggest states interested in these areas are often neighboring or nearby states, which is also intriguing. A few factors could be at play here, such as the cost of living making international travel less affordable, or, on a more positive note, it could be because locals are wanting to learn more about their own and neighboring states.

“Regardless of the reason, it could be great for the American tourism industry to see more interest in cities within the country.”
