As the nights draw in, our bank accounts prepare for Christmas and the veil thins, we wonder which holiday will brighten the gloom of winter next. In the lead-up to Halloween, you may be wondering how to decorate your home for the spooky season.
Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, has outlined his top tips for decorating your home for Halloween, using affordable methods and materials that are perfect for simple DIY projects, while also being a fun activity with the whole family in mind.

Why DIY?
Do-it-yourself decorations may not immediately come to mind when you prepare to create a spooky atmosphere in your home for Halloween, but they are a family-friendly, more affordable alternative to store-bought ornaments and trinkets. You may even have some of these materials already at home!
Making your own decorations can be a great way to bond with the family, give you a creative project to focus on, and keep the kids entertained. Plus, they’re unique and personalized for you and your home, in contrast with the same old things off the shelf.
Leaf Ghosts
The first decoration will require you to take the little helpers, a friend, or a partner out for a walk, or enjoy a solo stroll. Autumn is a perfect time for this activity, as there are fallen leaves everywhere, waiting to be transformed.
Pick up as many fallen leaves as you want in various shapes and sizes – small, long, stubby, and wide. Once you get back home with your pile of leaves, you’ll need some white paint. You can also use black, brown, gray, or another spooky color like orange or red. White is the most obvious color for ghosts though.
Paint the leaves your color of choice, and when the paint is dry, draw some eyes on using a permanent marker. Get creative and give them some other details, like fangs or eerie expressions.
Remember, the leaves do not need to be ghosts! You could also create bats or other spooky creatures, or simply give them amusing faces. This is your chance to get creative! Dot them around your house, in windows, on the walls, doors, or fridge for the perfect spooky display.
Wine Bottle Candlesticks
Using wine bottles, or any glass bottles sitting in your recycling, you can create elegant yet eerie candlesticks for Halloween.
You’ll need some more paint for this decoration too. Black is ideal for a dark and mysterious look, but another deep color like gray, brown or even red will also work.
Paint the bottles all over and simply place some long candlesticks in the mouth of the bottle. The candles can be a color like white or cream, red, orange, black, brown, gray, or whichever you think looks best with your bottle.
Place your DIY bottle candlesticks on your dining table, on the mantelpiece, in windows, or anywhere that looks right to you. Light them and watch the wax drip down and create an otherworldly atmosphere.
Giant Balloon Spiders
For this decoration, you may have guessed you’ll need some balloons, preferably black or a dark color to match a scary spider. To create the shape of a spider, you’ll need larger balloons for the body and smaller ones for the head. Tie the balloon knots together to form your gigantic spider.
The legs can be created from some black card you can cut into strips and attach to the body using tape or glue, gather some suitably sized sticks that you can paint black, or cut some black bin bags into strips and position them accordingly.
Hang these giant spiders from the ceiling or on the walls to send chills down the spine of those who dare enter their nest!
Bat Branches
This decoration would make a chilling centerpiece for a dining table or something to display on a side table or windowsill.
For the branches, you can collect some twigs from your garden or elsewhere. Make sure they are long enough to display in a vase and hold your colony of homemade bats, ensuring they are not too thick to maintain the creepy aesthetic.
Once you have gathered your twigs, you can paint them black or keep their original earthy color, or any Halloween color paint you fancy. Once dried, place them in a vase or something to hold them together nicely.
Now you can start on the bats, which requires some black card. Simply draw or stencil the shape of a bat on the card, cut it out with some scissors, and you have your bat! For more detail, add some black glitter or draw faces onto the bats. Create as many as you wish and use a hot glue gun or some sticky tack to attach the bats to the branches.
Tin Ghosts
Another haunted DIY decoration is for ghosts made from empty, used tins. With any empty tins of chopped tomatoes or beans, or even old cans of Coke or beer, paint these white for a ghostly appearance and once dry use black paint or permanent marker to add the spooky faces. It’s a good idea to get some good paint as white may require several coats.
Add some white ribbons, string or anything white and flowing you can find and attach to the open bottom of the tin. At the top, pierce a hole through the tin and thread some string through, creating a knot so it doesn’t slip out again. Then tie these tin ghosts anywhere in your home.
Somewhere with airflow like a window, doorway or even garden would be perfect as the ghosts sway in the wind and come to life.
Commenting on this, Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, has said: “DIY Halloween decorations are a fun, affordable way to bring your creativity to life. With just a few simple materials, you can craft unique pieces that stand out far more than store-bought décor.
“The personal touch adds charm, and every spooky detail becomes a reflection of your style, making it a memorable experience for everyone involved. Not only are crafts good for your mental health, but also save you money, and are a great way to spend time with the people you love.”
