A new study reveals that Instagram and Facebook are the apps that collect the most sensitive user data, far surpassing other popular platforms.

The study, conducted by QR Code Generator, analyzed the privacy policies of over 5,000 apps from the Apple App Store. Researchers assessed 46 indicators, including 35 types of data, six purposes for data collection, and five types of user relationships, to create a privacy invasion index out of 100.

Instagram and Facebook topped the list, each scoring 61.47, collecting 32 of 35 possible data types — 25 of which are linked to users, and seven both linked and tracked. These apps gather highly sensitive information, including physical addresses, device details, and user IDs. By comparison, YouTube and TikTok ranked much lower, at 27th and 76th respectively.

Other invasive apps include:

  • Grab: Taxi Ride, Food Delivery – 3rd place, 55.57/100, collects location, payment info, and purchase history.
  • Threads, Meta Business Suite, Messenger – tied for 4th, 54.53/100, all data linked but not tracked.
  • Nordstrom Rack: Shop Deals – 7th, 53.62/100.
  • Nordstrom – 8th, 52.54/100.
  • Pinterest – 9th, 50.06/100.
  • AE + Aerie – 10th, 50.01/100.

The research also highlighted that Photo-Video apps are the most invasive category overall, followed by Social Networking and Food & Drink apps.

Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L, emphasized:

“Smartphone users rely heavily on apps daily, but it’s crucial to understand how much data is being collected. Stay informed about privacy practices, read updates carefully, and only accept policies you’re comfortable with to maintain control over your privacy.”
