Cassie from Euphoria is one of the most polarizing fictional characters in modern television, and for good reason.
She starts a lot of discourse because people are unsure whether they should love her or hate her.
There’s an argument to be had on both sides, but for now, let’s dive into her 10 most unhinged moments on Euphoria in preparation for the release of Season 3.
We’ll start with the hot tub incident. Cassie was drunk while harboring the secret that she was hooking up with Nate behind Maddy’s back and because of that, she humiliated herself and completely lost composure. What should have been an iconic moment for Cassie wearing a sexy bikini while surrounded by all her friends turned into the definition of true embarrassment. While listening to Maddy and Nate fight about their current relationship status, it made her feel increasingly nauseous to the point that she actually threw up in the hot tub on top of all her friends. She exposed just how guilt ridden she was feeling after barfing because she repeatedly kept screaming how she was so sorry to Maddy alone without apologizing to anyone else who is in that hot tub. Her apology went deeper than feeling bad about throwing up. She obviously felt bad about hooking up with Nate, but she couldn’t outright say that in the moment.
Next up is when she hid in the bathtub from Maddy right after starting the secret affair with Nate. Cassie betrayed her best friend for a toxic relationship with Nate, and they started getting hot and heavy with each other in the bathroom at a party, knowing that Maddy was there at that very same party. Cassie’s decision to do this shed light on her desperation for male validation and all of her moral blindspots.
But the moment that made this scene so completely unhinged is that she laid down in the bathtub to hide from Maddy while Maddy was urinating.
When Maddy couldn’t find any toilet paper to use, she whipped herself clean with a washcloth and then tossed the washcloth into the bathtub where it landed on Cassie‘s face. Sadly, Maddy never knew the satisfaction of knowing her his used washcloth had landed smacked dab on Cassie‘s face. But it was completely unhinged in the most legendary and hilarious way.
Third was Cassie‘s Oklahoma breakdown, which we learned after the fact all just happened in her head. but it just goes to show how unhinged her headspace really was at that time. Her emotional rant started out based on insecurity because she felt she was being judged for her hair, makeup, and outfit since Rue accidentally thought she was auditioning for a part in the school play called Oklahoma. After completely losing her mind feeling like everyone was criticizing and scrutinizing her, she lost her marbles and started screaming, “I am in love with a Jacobs and he is in love with me. And don’t you f***ing give me that look Maddy because I didn’t f*** your boyfriend. You two were broken up for three weeks and three days before we even had sex, so I didn’t betray you. Plus, you guys are terrible for each other and you know I’m right and you guys can all judge me if you want, but I do not care. I have never ever been happier!” It was all in Cassie’s head, showcasing how much her mental health deteriorating.
Fourth was when Cassie made herself come while riding the carousel at the carnival after popping a molly. This is a scene that I find incredibly difficult to watch because it’s just so extra. We know that Molly is considered the love drug that makes you more susceptible to feelings of passion and pleasure, so it makes sense that Cassie was feeling so aroused, but the fact that she forgot that she was out in public surrounded by random people watching her is what made this so completely unhinged. But I try to give her a little bit of grace because she was far from sober. Her younger sister Lexi definitely didn’t give her grace when this happened because Lexi endured secondhand embarrassment over it. So much so that Lexi got her lick back by including a replicated scene of that in her school play because she was probably feeling so pissed off at her older sister for doing something so humiliating and embarrassing out in public.
Fifth was when Cassie started leaning to the obsessive 4 AM glow up routine in order to get needs attention. He ignored her in the hallway and it left her feeling broken, rejected, and unwanted. For a character like Cassie, who craves male validation and attention, Him ignoring her in the hallway was enough to send her spiraling. She started waking up at 4 AM to overdo it with her skin care routine, hair care routine, ice rolling, shaving, body scrubbing, body lotioning and more. She felt good about pouring into herself as much as she was doing, but the fact that she was only doing it with Nate in mind is what made it so disturbingly toxic. One thing that I was really reminded of while watching Cassie’s 4 AM glow up routine was reminiscent of the reason some people turn to eating disorders or micromanaging people around them. When a person feels that they have no control over things in their life, they often exhibit over excessive behavior in the only areas of their life where they have control in order to stop feeling so powerless. Cassie was trying to create the illusion of control through self perfectionism. She felt like if she could make herself perfect enough, then she could make herself desirable enough and that she would finally be loved and she would finally be wanted.
Sixth was when Cassie showed up at school completely copying Maddy’s swag, style, and aura. This moment went hand-in-hand with her 4 AM glow up routine because she really desperately wanted needs attention and she was willing to go to any and all extremes to get it. That included energetically shape shifting into Maddy since she knew Nate still had unresolved feelings for Maddy. When she showed up wearing the same exact outfit as Maddy, Nate actually gave her a second of attention, which made her feel momentarily fulfilled like she was on the right track and doing the right thing. But when Maddy ran into her and tried to call her out for it, she immediately retreated into shame and embarrassment and speed walked in the opposite direction to avoid taking accountability. This moment was completely unhinged because it proves that Cassie is well aware that Maddy is the blueprint that she can only dream of having the chance to emulate. Cassie knew that she wouldn’t be enough all on her own to attract Nate and that she would have to mimic, mirror, and imitate Maddy‘s excellence in order to even stand a chance.
Seventh was the moment Rue exposed Cassie in front of everyone to distract from the fact that she personally had relapsed. Rue didn’t want people focused on her addiction struggles, so she spit out the only thing she could think of to get the heat off her own back, which was exposing Cassie for secretly hooking up with Nate. Cassie tried to be helpful by telling Rue to take her sobriety one day at a time, and it deeply pissed Rue off. So much so that Rue put Cassie on the spot asking just how long she’d been secretly hooking up with Nate.
Cassie tried to laugh it off and pretend that Rue was just making it up, but it became abundantly clear to everyone there that Cassie was struggling to keep up the façade. Rue straight up told Maddy and everyone there that she saw Cassie get into Nate’s truck a month prior and at that moment, Cassie was exposed. A moment that was supposed to be focused on serving as an intervention for Rue ended up becoming the moment Maddy started cussing Cassie out and threatening to be violent with her.
Cassie, who is clearly not a physical fighter, started hyperventilating because she didn’t know how to react knowing that her physical safety was now being threatened, and that her friendship with her best friend was now irreversibly damaged. The most unhinged detail of this scene is that she continually kept trying to lie to Maddy’s face about it, even though it was abundantly clear that she had been sleeping with Nate.
Eighth is the moment Cassie got turned on when Nate was endangering her life in his speeding vehicle. They got his truck together, he turned on music while drinking beer and then started speeding up until he hit more than 100 mph. He kept drinking and driving faster well Cassie was doing her best to perform in front of him to show him that she was a cool girl. She drank liquor with him, slid out of her underwear, unbuckled her seatbelt, and put her head outside the car window as he drove to show him that she loves to let loose and get wild.
The reason this stood out to me for being so extremely unhinged is that I remember reading an article a few years back about the psychology of a man endangering a woman’s life by driving too fast in a car. If a man ever drives unsafely with you in his vehicle, knowing that you are precious cargo, it means he doesn’t love you, he doesn’t value you, and he truly doesn’t care about your health, safety, or well-being. He doesn’t care if you live or die. He doesn’t care about your future. He doesn’t care about your physical body. Because driving at that speed means that your life could be over. It means that you could be paralyzed forever, it means that you could lose mental capacity in case of a brain injury. There are so many ways that this could go wrong. And a man driving recklessly with you and his vehicle is the most clear evidence that he doesn’t value you. You are of no consequence to him. This goes beyond a man being nonchalant with you or apathetic. He truly doesn’t care if you live or die. Cassie was trying to prove herself to him in this scene and it made her look so incredibly unhinged and desperate for his validation.
Ninth is the meltdown Cassie had during Lexi‘s school play. Before the on-stage meltdown started, Cassie stormed out of the play to run to the girls bathroom where she stood staring her reflection, sobbing her eyes out. And then started trying to force herself to smile. It was a very Joker-esque moment where she was forcing a smile onto her face, even though she felt absolutely broken inside. She looked mentally unstable and unhinged as she forced herself to smile hard through her tears.
We have to keep in mind that the school play wasn’t supposed to be a revenge moment for Lexi, but energetically it sort of ended up morphing into a revenge moment because Lexi spent so much time living in her sister’s shadow, feeling humiliated by her sister, and feeling like she may never stand out in comparison to her sister. Lexi put on the school play because she wanted to express herself artistically and creatively.
But Cassie wouldn’t let her have that moment. She stormed into the auditorium, walked on stage and started shit talking Lexi for coming up with such a concept. At one point, Cassie dragged Lexi onto the stage while Lexi continually whisper begged her to stop. Cassie stole the moment from Lexi describing herself as the one who actually lives life and actually takes risks to further destroy Lexi‘s self-esteem. At the end of the unhinged rant, Cassie said, “If that makes me a villain, then so fucking be it.“ It was messy. It was chaotic. And it was unhinged, to say the least.
And lastly, the 10th unhinged moment for Cassie was when she actually got beaten down by Maddy. Maddy chased Cassie off the stage of the school play in an attempt to physically fight her. Since Cassie isn’t a physical fighter, she did her best to run away from Maddy, but she couldn’t run away in time.
Maddy slammed her into a brick wall in the school hallway, which caused Maddy‘s nose to start bleeding. In the end when she and Maddy had their final conversation of the season in the girls bathroom, Cassie looked visually insane with her hair all over the place, blood smeared under her nose, and smudged make up under her eyes.
In my opinion, these were Cassie’s most unhinged moments on Euphoria.
