• As the AI dating phenomenon continues, a new study has revealed which states are the most obsessed with AI romances.
  • The data found that Nevada is the seventh-most obsessed state with AI dating, amassing an average monthly search volume of 119.79 per 100,000 residents for terms like ‘AI Girlfriend’ and ‘AI Romance Chatbot.’

In recent months, the topic of AI dating has been making headlines, especially as OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, recently announced that ChatGPT will be introducing more explicit content to the site. Altman also announced plans for ChatGPT to become more ‘human-like,’ prompting concern among some of the site’s users.

Parents are also becoming increasingly concerned over the concept of children using AI chatbots, especially after Altman’s decision to introduce more explicit content to ChatGPT. Whilst the upcoming updates will operate on an age verification basis, the decision has still sparked a massive debate on social media.

In light of these recent updates, a new study has analyzed the AI dating phenomenon across America to reveal which states are the most frequently searching for AI dating chatbots and related terms.

The AI Ad Generator, Bestever, initially created a list of key terms relating to AI dating, such as “AI romance app” and “AI girlfriend,” to determine which states have the highest average monthly search volumes for these terms.

To accurately compare data across states of differing population sizes, the research scaled the data to reveal an average monthly search volume per 100,000 residents. This figure then determined the final ranking.

Nevada’s Findings:

Nevada is crowned the seventh-most obsessed state with AI dating chatbots, amassing an average monthly search volume of 119.79 per 100,000 people.

The data found that residents in Nevada are frequently searching for “Replika,” which is a software that allows users to engage in romantic conversations with an AI chatbot. The site promotes itself as the “AI for anyone who wants a friend with no judgment, drama, or social anxiety involved,” with users having the option to transform the chatbot into a “virtual girlfriend or boyfriend, friend, or mentor.”

Apoorva Govind, the founder and CEO of Bestever, has commented on the research:

“In recent months, the topic of AI dating chatbots has been attracting more and more attention. There has been a colossal surge in AI sites now offering their users the ability to form a romantic connection with an AI character. With some of these platforms offering video calls and audio messages, it’s understandable why many parents are viewing these sites with concern.

“While some of these chatbots are explicitly advertised as 18+, others create a concerning ‘teen-friendly’ brand in which users can form a friendship with an AI character while simultaneously offering explicit chat options.

“AI dating chatbots have also amassed criticism from those who believe that the rise of AI girlfriends is promoting potentially harmful ideologies surrounding women. Based on the research, it’s clear that there’s a growing demand for AI dating chatbots, with ‘AI Girlfriend’ taking the top spot as America’s most frequently searched term in relation to the subject.

“According to a recent survey, almost a third of Americans have admitted to having an intimate or romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, highlighting how this recent phenomenon is becoming increasingly common. Other research has also suggested that the demand for ‘human-like’ AI chatbots is highest among those aged 18 to 24.

“This prompts an interesting correlation between the age group most likely to spend the most time on social media and those most likely to use AI chatbots, with both issues raising concerning questions surrounding young people’s abilities to form connections beyond social media.

“There is also a growing trend of dating apps employing the use of AI, particularly when it comes to enhancing user profiles, such as editing bios and changing pictures. This has also prompted concern over the ability for people to form an authentic connection over a dating site when AI is involved, demonstrating how the technology may redefine intimacy and human connection in future years.”
