I gathered 10 reasons why I think Selena Gomez has recently become such an easy target for haters, because lately, people have been dragging her through the mud.

I’m a long-time Selena fan, so I’ve been on this roller coaster for a while, and just like all human beings on this planet, Selena isn’t perfect.

However, I don’t think the things she’s getting dragged for are entirely valid. Let’s talk about it.

Not standing on business with Benny Blanco

Selena claims to be happy in her marriage to Benny Blanco, so I’m doing my best to take that as face value, but I do kind of get why some fans are upset about their marriage. He has been dogging her out, clowning her, and humiliating her left and right in interviews. It’s giving Simone Biles’ husband energy slightly, and what I mean by that is… the energy of a man who feels the need to humble his woman instead of treating her like the prize she is. Simone Biles’ husband once claimed he had never heard of her when they met on a dating app, and she’s the one who heavily pursued him in the dating phase before they got married. And it seemed like he was trying to humble her or knock her down a peg because he’s intimidated by her level of success of notortiy. So you probably can understand why so many fans have drawn parallels between him and Benny Blanco. Selena kissing his dirty feet on his podcast was the cherry on top of an already problematic perception of their relationship, honestly. He humiliated her by revealing that she’s the one who asked him out for their first date, and he didn’t even know they were going on a date. He says at one point, she drove up to his place and sat outside his house because she didn’t want him to know she arrived so early, and he apparently watched her from the security cameras and told her later on, which is a small piece of embarrassing lore he could’ve kept to himself. Their joint album titled I Said I Love You First had fans curious to know which of them actually said it to the other first, and Benny was more eager than anything to let the world know Selena said it first during his interview on the Today Show. If it’s true that he feels the need to humble her since she’s one of the most successful and beloved women on this planet, then that’s really unfortunate. I’m not a big fan of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift anymore since she’s been dead silent about this political climate, and he exposed himself as a fan of Trump. But one thing I can positively say about Taylor and Travis is that Travis hypes her up. He speaks about Taylor with positive vibes to lift her up at every chance he gets. Benny can take a page from his book tbh. Because this alone is a big reason people are hating on Selena and judging her so hard lately.

Clone rumors

Secondly, let’s talk about the cloning rumors. Because yeah, Selena is getting dragged by fans who believe she’s not really Selena Gomez anymore. People think she’s been cloned, and another actress named Geena Davis is operating out of her skin at this point. It sounds outlandish AF, but a lot of people are convinced. I’ve had people go off on me in my comment sections about how I’m so uneducated on the topic of cloning, so I just don’t get it, but they are convinced Geena Davis has taken over Selena’s body through the method of cloning. The main argument is that Selena’s mannerisms and voice are now strikingly similar to Geena’s, especially compared to the way Selena used to talk and move around back in the day. Fans who refuse to believe the cloning rumors claim Selena’s mannerisms have changed because of her health diagnosis of lupus, which is an autoimmune disease. The question of her height has people talking as well though, since Selena’s height is stated to be 5’5 on the internet, but she looks a lot taller when standing next to Benny Blanco, who is allegedly 5’9. Since Geena Davis is 6 feet tall, the height thing has pushed the cloning rumors further. The detail that confused people most with all this is that Geena Davis is still very much alive. If her soul and conciousness was transferred into Selena’s body somehow, it wouldn’t make sense for Geena to still also be alive in her own body. The whole thing is very bizarre, but it’s making fans talk sh*t on the internet nevertheless. Let’s move on.

Ongoing Hailey Bieber / Justin Bieber drama

The ongoing drama between Selena Gomez and her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber will probably live on forever, and Selena’s drama with his wife, Hailey, will likely be an extension of that. Uncovering the reasons people have been hating on Selena lately most certainly requires touching on her drama with these two. The thing is, this is nothing new. This isn’t a reason why people are just now suddenly hitting on Selena. This has been an ongoing issue for many years. Fans of Hailey who really support her through and through often think they have to bash Selena in order to prove their loyalty to Hailey. And that has never been true. The same thing with Justin. Justin’s fans who have been loving his music for years believe it’s wrong of them to send love Selena’s way if they consider themselves true fans of Justin. That’s not true either. It’s possible to be cool with all of them, or at best be indifferent. Regardless, the ongoing drama between Selena, Haley, and Justin is a reason Selena faces SOME internet backlash.

Unethical billionaire label

Selena has been labeled an unethical billionaire, which is kind of a new addition to some of the negative things people have been saying about her online. And that’s because the billionaire title and her billionaire status are still something that comes as a shock to people. She was dubbed an official billionaire in September 2024, and although it’s now 2026, you still have a lot to say about her financial situation. Her net worth is currently estimated to fall somewhere around $1.3 billion, thanks to her incredible career, mostly due to rare beauty sales. After watching the makeup company in 2020, she has been killing it, but not everyone thinks that her billionaire status is something to be proud of. Some fans dragged Selena on the Internet because they don’t believe any billionaire in the world can be an ethical human being. When poverty still exists on this planet while one person sits on more than $1 billion, it doesn’t sit right with many activists across the globe. The widespread belief among plenty of people in the activism world is that billionaires are inherently evil since they have the opportunity to end so much suffering around the world, yet they refuse to do so. By that same token, there are a lot of people who are not upset with Selena at all for her billionaire status. Many diehard supporters are of the belief that she earned her money and she deserves to spend it however she wants. In my personal opinion, my thoughts on Selena‘s billionaire status are a bit nuanced because I know that she does use a lot of her money on charitable causes, especially pertaining to mental health, which is a really big deal to her. So it’s definitely a complicated topic. Sure, she could definitely be doing more, but it is what it is. Nevertheless, this is another big reason why some people have been hating on Selena on the Internet.

Rare Beauty scandal

While we’re on the topic of Selena‘s wealth, which was accrued from rare beauty, I will shift gears to another reason fans have been hating on Selena, which revolves around her rare beauty. In 2025, Selena made a comment about how her brand doesn’t use models and prefers to feature real people, but her remark went viral, prompting some backlash. One of the campaign models hired for the brand anonymously spoke out to say that Selena‘s comments were degrading, claiming that they erased the hard work of hundreds of models Rare Beauty has had over the years. She said Selena‘s words left her in tears. The backlash Selena got from Not dominated social media pages for a while, with people claiming Selena was trying too hard to sound relatable and ended up screwing over some of her model employees in the process. Overall, rare beauty has largely stayed out of the spotlight when it comes to scandals. Most headlines you’ll find about the brand are pretty positive. But the comments Selena made about models have been labeled “degrading.”

New music criticism… people miss her older stuff

The next reason Selena has faced backlash on the internet comes down to her newer music. The biggest complaint I’ve seen from people is that Selena‘s new music doesn’t hold a candle to her older stuff. People have been criticizing her newest album with Benny Blanco since they miss some of the music, she used to release back in the day, including some of her biggest songs like who says and love you like a love song from 2011, same old love and good for you from 2015, fetish, and it ain’t me from 2017, ice cream and lose you to love me from 2020, and even calm down from 2022. She released her joint album with Benny Blanco called I Said I Love You First, as I previously mentioned, but if you analyze her top-streamed songs on Spotify, none of the songs from the album break the top 10 list. Interestingly enough, a lot of Selena‘s older music was written with the help of Benny Blanco anyway, so you’d think that their newer album would have gotten just as much love, but when it comes to streams, the evidence just isn’t there to back it up. The album did do pretty well, considering it was the top-selling release of the week when it first debuted, but again, social media users have still had their complaints about how much they miss Selena‘s older music compared to this new album.

Lingering Emilia Perez backlash

If you’re curious, for another reason people have been hating on Selena online, we can reflect back on her performance in Amelia Perez. Fellow actor Eugenio Derbez called detention to his disapproval of Selena‘s performance that her lack of fluency in the Spanish language was “indefensible.” She responded in defense, saying, “I’m sorry. I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.“ For the most part, I’d say fans got over this drama, but it only happened about a year ago, and there are some people who are still pretty bothered by it all. Selena is a Latina actress, so many Latin fans expected more out of her for this role, and they were disappointed and let down by the results. It’s not very difficult to find posts and memes of people making fun of Selena for her performance in Amelia Perez if you take a quick scroll through social media. I personally never watched the movie myself, so I’m not here to judge her performance either way.

Drama with Francia Raisa

One of the big reasons people hate on Selena comes down to the drama she has with Francia Risa. And this isn’t exactly a new reason people are hating on Selena, because this has been ongoing drama for a while now. Francia donated a kidney to Selena in 2017, and it was a really big deal at the time. A kidney transplant is not something small, and it needed to be done because Selena was facing lupus-related kidney failure. At the time, it seemed that nothing could destroy their friendship. But when Selena commented on not having very many friends in the entertainment industry, Francia responded to that, taking offense to the fact that she wasn’t considered one of Selena‘s Hollywood friends. Reality is that Francia is also a celebrity, although her celebrity status is a bit minimal compared to Selena’s. Francia is an actress you might recognize from shows and movies like The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Grown-ish, and Bring it On: All or Nothing. Ever since then, Selena and Francia have not really been spotted hanging out… and Francia was noticeably absent from Selena’s wedding to Benny Blanco. Because of all this, Selena gets dragged at random every once in a while when videos go viral on TikTok of people bashing her for not maintaining loyalty in her friendship with Francia.

Selena was a producer on 13 Reasons Why

The last thing I’ve seen Selena get online hate for is the fact that she served as a producer on the show 13 Reasons Why in 2020, but the reason it still gets brought up in conversation today is due to its edgy nature, and the fact that it always gets compared to you for it.
The newest season of Euphoria premiered in 2026, which means people are still talking about it a lot. And when people bring up Euphoria, a lot of people bring up reasons why, and they both get dragged for being provocative shows that are arguably too inappropriate to be consumed by audiences. Sal served as a producer on 13 Reasons Why, and some fans have spoken up with their anger at her for being part of that show in the first place. Conversations about that aren’t as common anymore since the show ended, but these conversations still do arise whenever people compare 13 Reasons Why to Euphoria.

Ultimately, these are the big reasons why I’ve seen people suddenly start hating on Selena Gomez recently, some of these reasons being brand new, and some of them are scandals that have lingered for a while.
