When I consider Nate Archibald from Gossip Girl, I think about how he’s one of the easiest characters to love since I rarely ever find people hating on him. But I do feel like his love life could’ve used a couple of adjustments before the show came to an end.

We had six seasons to work things out for Nate so he could have his happily ever after moment, but he still ended the show completely single. I don’t really get why Nate ended the show single when we were able to watch Dan and Serena tie the knot, and we saw Blair and Chuck together happily ever after.

Nate was the most unproblematic character out of all of them, if you really think about it, knowing that he never even sent in a Gossip Girl blast about any of his friends.

However, he still ended the show alone.

And that’s not necessarily the worst thing ever because it gives the idea that he ended the show as a bachelor, free to date whoever he wanted whenever he wants.

Which certainly works out for a character like Nate based on his incredibly good looks.

But the hopeless romantic in me would have preferred to see him have his happily-ever-after moment.

So I’ve gone down the list of his ex-girlfriends to narrow down five women I think he could have had successful marriages with, and five of his girlfriends I wish he never touched in the first place.

Because there were definitely some girls he dated that he had no business hooking up with whatsoever.

And I’ll start with Jenny Humphrey, of course, because she is the most obvious ex-girlfriend on his list who probably should have ended up as his wife.

Jenny Humphrey

I’m not the only Gossip Girl fan who agrees that Jenny and Nate should have ended the show together.

Taylor Momsen quit the show after season three and only had a few small appearances in season four. But for the most part, she was gone after season three, and I totally get that.

Taylor Momsen wanted to be written out of the show, and the Gossip Girl writers respected that by writing Jenny off the show.

However, Jenny still showed up for the finale episode to attend Dan and Serena’s wedding.

That being said, why couldn’t she have been written to have her happily ever after with Nate Archibald?

So many endings on the show were rushed in that sixth season.

Somehow, Jenny and Blair went into business together to launch a fashion line, and we got no explanation for how that transpired at all. It was completely rushed.

So if they were willing to rush that narrative, why couldn’t they have given us a glimpse of Nate and Jenny holding hands or cozying up together on the sofa to show us all that they had gotten back together?

I really don’t think that would have been an insane direction to go.

Especially since so many Gossip Girl fans ship Nate and Jenny’s relationship through and through.

Jenny went through highs and lows of sometimes being super toxic, and in some cases she served as the villain of Gossip Girl.

But she was always a lovable villain, and I always had a soft spot for her while watching the show.

Her love story with Nate always captivated me as a viewer, and I believe they could have had a really great ending if they were written to reconcile before the finale.

In my ideal Gossip Girl dream world, Jenny and Nate would have ended up married.

Sage Spence

But we don’t always get what we want as viewers in the pop culture world when it comes to the media we consume, and that’s absolutely true when I think about Nate’s relationship with Sage Spence in the sixth season of the show.

There’s absolutely no reason Nate should have dated Sage.

I’m not going to fault him for hooking up with her in the first place, but after finding out she was 17, he should have instantly dumped her.

I understand that the age of consent is 17 years old in New York, but Nate still shouldn’t have been messing with her because I’m pretty sure he was either 21 or 22 years old at the time.

It’s easy to look at Nate through rose-colored glasses since he’s generally a really great guy and a great character on the show, but his choice to continue dating Sage was a major lapse in judgment.

And he 100% should’ve dumped her.

He obviously did dump her before the finale episode, which is fine and dandy.

But I think he should have dumped her right after finding out about her age.

And she is one of his exes who definitely would have never ended up as his wife.

Vanessa Abrams

Vanessa is second in line for being one of Nate’s exes who I can picture ending up as his wife.

I put her in second place after Jenny Humphrey.

And that’s because I also enjoyed seeing Nate and Vanessa’s relationship unfold on Gossip Girl.

In fact, the love triangle dynamics of Nate, Vanessa, and Jenny were some of the most fascinating scenes on the entire show in my opinion.

Not everyone might agree, but to me, I was hooked.

It was really interesting watching Jenny and Vanessa fight over Nate since Jenny and Vanessa were such good friends to start and resonated with each other over their Brooklyn roots.

But they were both willing to throw their relationship under the bus for attention and affection from Nate Archibald.

Anyway, I appreciated Nate and Vanessa’s relationship for the most part since it seemed they challenged each other, respected each other, and genuinely had each other’s best interests at heart.

I can picture Nate and Vanessa ending up as husband and wife on Gossip Girl if the show were rewritten.

Catherine Beaton

Catherine Beaton is one of Nate’s worst ex-girlfriends in my opinion.

I hated seeing her and Nate’s relationship because the whole thing just felt so sleazy and dirty the entire time.

Obviously, they started hooking up while he knew she was a married woman.

And he kind of just went along with it because he found her attractive and probably didn’t think too deeply into it.

But the thing about Nate is that he catches feelings, and when he falls, he falls hard.

And he did catch feelings for Catherine.

He started feeling jealous that she was still focused on her husband, so he enlisted the help from Serena to make Catherine jealous.

The only reason you would try to make someone jealous is that your feelings for them run extremely deeply.

And that is what happened between Nate and Catherine.

But things took a very sharp and sinister turn for them when Catherine started threatening to blackmail Nate in order to keep him in her clutches because she wanted their affair to continue after he was ready to end things with her completely.

I really wish he had never started things up with her in the first place because he deserved better than what she was putting him through.
