The men of Gossip Girl have given me the ick on multiple occasions, especially since I’ve watched and rewatched the show many times over the years.
It was easier to be forgiving of Gossip Girl characters when I was a young teenager, but re-watching the show as an adult has given me a clear perspective on things, and the Gossip Girl guys have been embarrassingly messy, egregiously problematic, and in a lot of cases, they fit the exact description of a fuck boy.
These are just a few examples I’ve rounded up from the show of times the Gossip Girl guys gave me the ick.
Nate dating 17-year-old Sage
I’ll start strong with the fact that Nate decided to keep dating Sage after finding out how old she was. Nate found out Sage was only 17 years old and decided to keep dating her anyway, which I was confused by, to say the least.
I’m pretty sure he was 21 or 22 years old at the time, which is way too old to be dealing with her. And to make matters worse, it’s not like she was even visually or emotionally mature.
On a physical level, she looked extremely young in every sense of the word, and on an emotional level, she was probably the most immature character to be written into Gossip Girl.
She was giving Serena HELL, while Serena tried to date her father, and she was just all around unlikable. I don’t get why Nate kept dating her. It gave me the ick.
Chuck’s predatory BS in episode 1
There’s no way I can leave out Chuck’s disturbing behavior in the first episode of Gossip Girl. Chuck tried to force himself on both Serena and Jenny, turning himself into a true predator early on in the show.
Because of his actions in the first episode, there are some Gossip Girl fans who dubbed him unforgivable and still don’t respect him, regardless of the redemption arc he went on. And I totally understand that mentality.
Because yes, Chuck definitely went on a redemption arc where he turned his life around in a complete 180, but his actions in the first episode were deplorable.
Gave me the ick for sure.
Part of his redemption arc included him becoming a brotherly figure to Serena, who he eventually gained trust from by showcasing a brotherly sense of loyalty and love.
And he did eventually apologize directly to Little J’s face. But still, there’s no way you didn’t get the ick from him in episode 1.
