We need to talk about Kylie Jenner versus the MAGA allegations she’s been receiving, because it’s honestly a very mixed bag when you think about where her politics land.
Full disclosure, but I used to be a massive fan of Kylie during her Snapchat era, like a decade ago.
My love and admiration for her kinda dwindled in recent years because she started feeling like more of a surface-level walking advertisement in every single thing she posted on social media, whereas back in the day, she actually showcased her personality.
I understand that the general public has lost personality privileges from Kylie because she spent so many years being heavily scrutinized, so I totally get it and I don’t judge her for it. But it’s just hard to consider myself as big of a fan as I once was when it doesn’t feel like she talks about anything real in the world anymore. And that opinion of her definitely holds some water in the political department.
A lot of people these days don’t necessarily want to continue supporting celebrities who aren’t on their right side of history. Supporting people who are boldly outspoken in favor of human rights is the way a lot of us would prefer to live our lives and the way a lot of us would prefer to spend our hard-earned dollars.
So that’s why I really do want to dig into Kylie‘s politics, since there have been a lot of contradicting thoughts about where she stands, and she has a businesswoman who markets her products to people, mainly a demographic of the girls and the gays.
So if she doesn’t really stand for the girls and the gays, then she doesn’t really deserve to be pulling in dollars from the girls and the gays. At least in my opinion.
However, I think there has been a pretty decently solid amount of evidence on Kylie‘s end that indicates more liberal leaning views. Including her current relationship with Timothée Chalamet, who revealed himself to be very anti-Trump a few years back.
I’ll also share a few of the reasons some fans have questioned Kylie‘s stance. Based on a few of the questionable MAGA-adjacent things she’s done. But I’ll get more into that in a second.
Kylie’s political energy
Back in 2015, Kylie veered into political territory for the first time in her young career when she publicly supported her transgender parent. Caitlin Jenner came out as transgender, and Kylie publicly supported her. The Equality Federation specifically praised Kylie at the time for expressing love and support for Kaitlyn.
According to Us Weekly, she said she knew her father was transgender for her “whole life“ and she ultimately felt relieved and happy that Kaitlin could finally live authentically. It’s so ironic that Kylie was openly and vocally supportive of Caitlyn‘s transgender identity when Caitlyn later started rubbing literally everyone the wrong way by spouting conservative politics in favor of Donald Trump.
Caitlin became a massive disappointment to the LGBTQ community when she did that. Truth be told, Kylie cared more about supporting LGBTQ rights than Caitlyn did for herself.
At the end of 2015, Kylie donated Christmas gifts to homeless LGBTQ youth at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, according to Us Weekly. She privately made those donations without announcing it to the world or posting about it on social media.
The center is the one that publicized the fact that she made those donations, which means it’s something she chose to do out of the kindness of her own heart without expecting clout or attention for it.
2015 is also the year Kylie launched an anti-bullying campaign called #IAmMoreThan. The reason this campaign classifies as a political statement from Kylie is because one of the noteworthy posts included in her campaign came from a gay male survivor of sexual assault and domestic violence.
She used her platform to highlight his particular story in her anti-bullying campaign, which definitely belongs on the record when it comes to her history with social justice.
In 2016, Kylie explicitly called herself a feminist in an interview with Glamour UK. This was one of the clearer pieces of evidence that Kylie is a celeb who leans more liberal and democratic than anything else. Republicans have serious beef with feminists. They think women should be submissive to men. They don’t think women should have roles in leadership. They don’t think women should have rights when it comes to their own bodies.
The worst of the worst, like Todd Blanche, don’t think there should be any exceptions made when it comes to a woman’s right to choose. They don’t think women should have the right to choose even in cases of a little girl being assaulted and impregnated by her own father. Even in cases of the mother‘s life being at risk.
So the fact that Kylie explicitly called herself a feminist, saying, “I do consider myself a feminist,“ was absolutely evidence of her willingness to clap back against the patriarchy. She discussed the way she makes her own money, runs her own businesses, and although she dates men, she doesn’t depend on men. She discussed her desire to inspire young women to stand on their own two feet regarding self-empowerment and entrepreneurship.
In 2016, Kylie shared an endorsement for Hillary Clinton when she posted a Snapchat using the vote filter with the word HER in capital letters. Hillary Clinton‘s campaign slogan was I’m with her back in 2016. Multiple outlets, including Teen Vogue and Just Jared, confirmed both Kylie and Kendall Jenner‘s endorsement of Hillary at the time.
2016 was also the year Kylie partnered with a charity called Sinful Colors on a campaign benefiting the Los Angeles LGBT Center and a group called Stomp Out Bullying. The campaign was all about putting an end to cyberbullying, homophobia, racism, and hatred. 2016 was a common era for people to post rainbow symbolism and low-effort quotes on Instagram every once in a while.
Kylie was actually putting her money where her mouth was and joining forces with major campaigns that fought for human rights. Campaigns that try to put an end to homophobia and racism wouldn’t exist from Republican organizations. Kylie consistently paired up with organizations that were extremely democratic.
In 2019, Kylie donated $750,000 to a women’s empowerment organization on the Ellen DeGeneres show. The Florida organization called Nest of Love focuses on helping women and children in low-income environments by promoting female empowerment. Democrats are the party that cares about offering a helping hand to women and children in need, so even though this organization didn’t outright claim to be democratic or liberal, it’s abundantly obvious where they stand in my opinion. And Kylie‘s donation to them was massive.
In 2020, Kylie issued a statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during the George Floyd protest. She posted, “There comes a time when silence is betrayal“, words for Martin Luther King Jr. Her caption said, “Nobody should have to live in fear, and nobody deserves a death like George Floyd and too many others. Speaking up is long overdue for the rest of us. We’re currently dealing with two horrific pandemics in our country, and we can’t sit back and ignore the fact that racism is one of them. I fear for my daughter, and I hope for a better future for her. My heart breaks for George Floyd’s family and friends. Don’t let his name be forgotten.”
This was the era when she also made sure Kylie Cosmetics took part in the Pull Up for Change initiative, which pushed businesses to reveal their stats and numbers showcasing how many black employees they had on staff. Kylie Cosmetics revealed they had 13% black representation and leadership on their team. They also disclosed that their staff consisted of 100% women identifying people, with 47% of those people being from minority groups.
In September 2020, Kylie encouraged her social media followers to get registered to vote by posting a bikini shot and a link to vote.org. According to TMZ, more than 48,000 users clicked the vote.org link through her Instagram post, so clearly she had some positive influence there.
A few months after that, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the election, she publicly celebrated by posting a photo of Kamal Harris surrounded by confetti. A lot of us were extremely relieved when Joe and Kamala won the election, and that obviously includes Kylie at the time.
In 2021, Kylie participated in the Stop Asian Hate social media campaign, which is evidence of her taking another racial justice position that just doesn’t fit into the MAGA profile or the MAGA agenda whatsoever. Speaking out on behalf of minority groups in general is just not something MAGA people ever really do.
In 2022, her ex-brother-in-law at the time, Kanye West, was constantly saying insane things in support of the MAGA movement, and he was also making anti-Jewish statements too. Kylie clapped back against his rhetoric, posting, “I support my Jewish friends and the Jewish people.“ Kendall, Khloe, and Kris all posted the same thing, almost like the family came together in a united front against Kanye’s antisemitism. Kylie was far from defensive of Kanye‘s antics.
So there has definitely been a long list of behaviors and activities from Kylie that give us the indication that she is more of a liberal-leaning celebrity, even though she hasn’t outright called herself a Democrat or a conservative. But there are valid reasons people have questioned her political stance.
One. She posted a pro-Israel post in 2023 that she quickly deleted right after. People who are pro-Israel tend to fit into the MAGA or conservative party, so the fact that she did that definitely rubbed people the wrong way. She lost around 800,000 Instagram followers in the aftermath, according to The Washington Post. It’s widely speculated that she was misinformed when she posted that, thinking she was continuing the message of shutting down antisemitism when she posted it. However, when the actual situation was explained to her, she took the post down.
Two. Questions arose when she hosted a Handmaid’s Tale party. It was a major contradiction to her claims of feminism. The Handmaid’s Tale is a show that claps back against the patriarchy as it sheds light on what a utopian society would look like if women were stripped of all their reproductive rights. The show is not meant to be taken lightly or used as a joke. However, when Kylie hosted a party using The Handmaid’s Tale as the theme, fans didn’t love it because it seemed like she was making a joke out of a very serious topic.
Three. The fact that Caitlyn Jenner is super conservative had people questioning if Kylie was willing to follow in the same footsteps. However, everyone has to keep in mind that just because your parents vote a certain way, it doesn’t mean you do too.
Four. Kylie had some drama with Amandla Stenberg in 2015 when she posted a pic of herself in cornrows. Amandla criticized her for being a culture vulture, appropriating Black culture without ever using her platform to address racism and police brutality at the time. Kylie responded by saying, “Mad if I don’t, mad if I do.” Then she told Amandla to “go hang with Jaden Smith,” according to The Fader. Kylie’s public beef with Amandla definitely had people questioning Kylie’s stance because of how defensive Kylie got. She could’ve taken that moment as a learning experience to understand that it’s really not cool to appropriate Black culture when you’re not even willing to speak up on behalf of Black culture when it comes to racism and police brutality. This was a 2015 incident, though, and after that, Kylie did publicly speak out against racism and police brutality on multiple occasions, as I previously stated in this video.
Five. Another reason people have questioned Kylie’s stance comes down to the way the Kardashian-Jenner family has seemingly maintained friendly relationships with so many conservatives. Mainly Kim Kardashian’s friendship with Ivanka Trump, and the fact that Kim reposted a pic of Melania Trump on her Instagram Story at one point to hype up Melania’s fashion sense. Kylie gets lumped in when her other family members do stuff like that pretty often.
So what about Kylie’s current relationship with Timothée Chalamet? The interesting thing about him is that he made it very clear that he doesn’t support Donald Trump, and this is something he publicized to the world before his relationship with Kylie started. In 2020, Timothée urged his followers to vote Donald Trump out of office in a post that included some curse words on his Instagram Story. He talked about his decision to venture into political territory with i-D magazine, saying, “I don’t know if it’s a pressure, I do feel it’s a responsibility though. I was talking about this with [former co-star] Steve Carell, about how there was a general complacency in previous generations that everything was going along nicely and that ratcheted the stakes up really high. People our age are so much more engaged, and I think that’s a good thing.”
Timothée doesn’t get political too often anymore these days, and neither does Kylie, but the fact that he felt that strongly about being anti-Trump back then leads me to believe he likely still maintains a lot of the same views because it’s pretty difficult to be staunchly against a political party that targets minority groups and then randomly flip your switch overnight.
I absolutely think Kylie should be more vocal about her political stance today and now, but who knows if that’s going to happen. For now, I’m basing this off of all the things she’s politically done in front of the public over the last decade or so.
My final verdict is that Kylie is politically liberal, but her silence in recent years has been deafening AF, and it would be a great time for her to speak the fuck up.
