In fact, in her comment section on social media, fans have revealed to her that the characters she’s played have helped them come out of the closet to their parents. In Pretty Little Liars, she played Emily Fields who was grappling with her sexuality in high school.
Emily struggled to come to terms with the fact she was a lesbian for quite some time until she finally realized she needed to live her truth. One fun fact many people might not know is that she originally auditioned for the role of Spencer Hastings. It’s obvious she was much better suited to play Emily! In Netflix’s YOU, she played the role of Peach Salinger, another lesbian character. Granted, Peach was a lot more toxic since she would secretly take creepy pictures of her best friend… but she was still a super interesting character to follow.
She lives life in her own way
When the cast of Pretty Little Liars was linking up to get matching tattoos, Shay almost didn’t take the bait. She would’ve been totally going against the grain if she hadn’t decided to get the matching tattoo with her castmates. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to be part of the group, but she was actually fearful of the pain it would cause.
Since she’s played notable LGBTQ characters in the past, people in the real world constantly question her sexuality. She doesn’t put labels on that though. In an interview with Cosmo, she said, “You love who you love. Black, white, polka dot, that’s what my dad always said. I’m never going to label myself.” She is all about living life her own way.
