Whether you’re a new graduate or you’re deciding to forge a new path later in life, it can be extremely hard to decide what career path you should take.

What’s wonderful (and terrifying!) is that there are so many options to choose from: how can you possibly pick? Fortunately, while we might not have the exact answer, we can at least help you decide where to begin looking.

Make a list of your passions

To start with: make a list of your passions. This sounds obvious, but it really isn’t: most people often will ignore their passions in favor of what they think they need to do.

For example, people artistically inclined might ignore a path in the arts, fearing such a thing wouldn’t make them money – but being an artist isn’t the only way to incorporate creativity in the workspace.

By seeking out jobs that are related to that interest or have creative traits, one can find satisfaction in their work.

Understand what makes you thrive

Secondly: understand what it is you like to do in a job. Some people find they thrive when it comes to talking to others, while others may shirk.

Others know that they love to sit and input data, while others get a kick out of physical labor. Even if you’re unhappy in your current job, try to think of the bits of it you dislike the least – or, if you can’t think of anything, think of other jobs that have in the past brought you some kind of pleasure or given you energy. Chances are, therein lies a clue to your next career.

Remember that this process takes time

Finally, try to remember that it takes time to find something you really enjoy working in. While having a set dream is nice, there are plenty of people out there who take a long time to find their dream job.

Much like dating, it’s a process – but if you stick with it, you can absolutely find something you not just enjoy doing, but find yourself thriving in.
