Racism is such an ugly and terrible thing to have to deal with for people of color.

It’s even more challenging when you find yourself disillusioned by people you never would’ve thought could’ve been capable of spewing out racist commentary.

A young woman shared her story on Reddit breaking down an uncomfortable situation she’s currently dealing with in her romantic relationship.

She’s a black woman and her boyfriend is a white man. Their relationship has been going on for about five months and they’ve been considering marriage and starting a family with each other.

Things took a sour turn when she overheard his parents calling her the n-word. According to OP, her heart dropped when she heard what was being said about her behind her back.

She explained that since she lives in Canada, it’s been difficult for her to meet people she can trust.

She texted her sisters at the moment she heard his parents talking because she didn’t know where else to turn.

They urged her to make an excuse to get out of her boyfriend’s house immediately. She ended up exiting quickly without telling them she heard them talking.

Now, OP is considering ending her relationship altogether because she doesn’t want to potentially marry into a racist situation.

According to Reddit, she hasn’t updated the post other than to let commenters know that she’s planning to have a conversation with her boyfriend about what she overheard.

She wrote back to someone saying, “I will talk to him but I don’t think the relationship will survive. He and his family seemed close so I can’t ask him to cut them out of his life and I don’t think I can move past what they said. So I don’t see how the relationship can survive.”

Her discomfort in wanting to avoid marrying into racism is fully valid.

It’s heartbreaking that an otherwise healthy relationship will be tossed down the drain due to prejudiced opinions from the people who raised her partner.
