Why does it seem like Taylor Swift always releases music that is so damn relatable?
Any girl who lost her virginity with a summer fling can relate to the lyrics in “August.” This is a song that was part of Taylor‘s 2020 album, Folklore.
Although the song is a couple of years old, its popularity has been revived thanks to TikTok.
Taylor sings about a summer fling that includes the intimate moment of having sex for the first time.
She also sings about the fact that she accepts that what went down between her and this special person will live in her memory as something she’ll always reflect on.
A deep dive into “August” by Taylor Swift
The opening lines to “August” by Taylor Swift describe a summertime vibe by the beach.
Taylor sings, “Salt air, and the rust on your door. I never needed anything more.” Where else do you smell salt air than by the beach?
Then she talks about that conversation between her and her special someone when they’re about to have sex for the first time.
Taylor sings, “Whispers of ‘Are you sure?’ Never have I ever before.”
Losing your virginity is a big deal. Making sure you’re actually ready is key.
Then she sings about the way the month of August passes by so quickly. Summer flings typically stretch across the months of June, July, and August.
By the time August comes around, it means a summer fling is likely coming to an end soon.
Taylor sings, “I can see us lost in the memory. August slipped away into a moment in time. ‘Cause it was never mine.”
She is seemingly acknowledging the fact that this summer fling was never an official relationship when she says “was never mine.”
Then she goes on to sing, “And I can see us twisted in bedsheets. August sipped away like a bottle of wine. ‘Cause you were never mine.”
In these lines, she’s reminiscing on what it was like to share moments of sexual intimacy with this person.
After that, Taylor sings, “Back when we were still changin’ for the better. Wanting was enough. For me, it was enough. To live for the hope of it all.”
In these lines, she’s referring to how young she was. When you’re still “changing for the better,” you’re obviously still growing, evolving, and becoming who you are as you approach adulthood.
At the time, “wanting was enough” for Taylor. She was okay with living for the “hope of it all.”
She didn’t know where things were heading between her and her summer fling, but she dove in headfirst anyway.
After that, Taylor sings, “Cancel plans just in case you’d call. And say, ‘Meet me behind the mall.’”
These lines are something anyone can relate to when they’re first catching feelings.
Although you know you shouldn’t neglect your friends for the person you’re falling for, it’s difficult to think straight.
You’d rather cancel plans to make sure your schedule is totally open for the person you like.
Then Taylor sings, “So much for summer love and saying ‘us.’ Cause you weren’t mine to lose. You weren’t mine to lose, no.”
In these lines, she’s reiterating the fact that the summer fling was never an official relationship.
Feeling sad about losing someone who was never really yours is a different kind of pain to deal with.
Instead of harping on the sadness of what happened between her and this person, Taylor instead chooses to reminisce with mature nostalgia.
