How to be happy… that is the question. Cultivating a life of happiness where you feel totally fulfilled is a common goal for most people.
Sadly, too many people just don’t know how to get there. Getting past negative emotions and blockages can be challenging.
TikToker and neuroscientist @EmOnTheBrain shared a video breaking down some of her best tips for keeping the brain as happy as possible. Find her on Instagram @EmOnTheBrain.
Skip the cocktails
Emily’s first piece of advice is to stop drinking liquor.
She says, “Number one is to avoid alcohol. I know you probably heard it before, but alcohol actually changes the way our DNA is red and predisposes us to anxiety — Aside from all of the other negative effects.”
Alcohol can be fun for the night, but the hangover you deal with the next day is never a vibe. It’s not always worth it to order that round of shots.
Exercise early in the day
Emily encourages everyone to move their body at the start of their day.
She says, “Number two is get my morning movement. Even if I don’t have time to work out, a simple morning walk can decrease activity in the amygdala, which reduces feelings of fear, stress, and anxiety.”
Who wants to be riddled with anxiety? If a little bit of movement in the early hours of the day can put an end to that, why not jump on board?
Take your probiotics
When it comes to the consumption of probiotics, Emily is an advocate.
She says, “It’s been shown that probiotics can enhance brain function, and also help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.”
The good news is that it’s easy to find loads of different probiotics at most grocery stores and drug stores.
You can find them in pill form, gummy form, droplet form, and powder form.
Prioritize your sleep
Getting enough sleep is hugely impactful to the level of happiness you have in your life.
Emily says, “Number four is to get great, quality, deep sleep. Everyone talks about how important sleep is, but really what’s important is deep sleep.
“Deep Sleep is… when the body and brain actually heal and regenerate.”
Arranging a steady nighttime routine for yourself is a great starting point if you want to start sleeping deeper at night.
Vitamin D is your friend

It comes as no surprise that absorbing vitamin D would be part of Emily’s list.
She says, “Number five is to get sunlight and vitamin D. Sunlight in the morning is great for setting circadian rhythms and boosting your energy levels for the rest of the day.
“And setting a biological clock to help us fall asleep at night. Vitamin D also helps boost serotonin levels, which can help relieve stress and anxiety, and boost your mood.”
Spending a portion of your day in the great outdoors to absorb enough vitamin D from the sun is an easy step towards being a happier human.
