Traveling the world is something many people dream of doing, but not everyone actually does in real life.

Pulling the trigger on travel can be scary, but missing out on experiences before getting too old is even scarier.

One Reddit thread is asking regular people why they feel so inclined to book trips, travel to new places, and schedule vacations.

Here’s what the bulk of honest wanderlust-filled travelers had to say.

Becoming present

“There are moments during travel where you are on Earth, but you are transported to a different world.

You become very present in these moments as you realize just how totally different of a place you are in.

Nothing is what you are used to. The people are different, the views, the food, the culture, the norms, the atmosphere, everything.

Thoughts in your mind just fade away. It is totally clear. You wander around like a child born again in this fascinating, weird, strange new world.

I know what I’m saying here sounds a bit cliche, but it’s so true, and for anyone else who’s been there, you know exactly what I’m describing.

It is this feeling of pure magic, wonder, and fantasy which is why I travel.”

Soaking it all in

“I just love going somewhere new and soaking it all in. One of my favorite things I love to do on vacation is go on long walks and sort of get lost on purpose.

My wife [and] I have a ten-month-old and he’s already been to three states, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

We might visit London in early to mid-December.”

Exploring in adulthood

“I grew up and stayed in the same city for 20 years, been traveling as a kid with parents always to the same countries but only because we had family there for special occasions or vacations so I didn’t really feel like it was exploring.

Then in my twenties I traveled so many places by myself or with people my age, it’s totally different.

And after every return I always wanted to go back for more, and had specific places I wanted to go so I would have more stories to tell.

I basically breathe to travel, without traveling I feel like my existence is pointless.”

Searching for something meaningful

“I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. In reality, I love the exploration.

I love the out-of-the-way places. I love old civilizations. And I’m sort of trying to prove myself to myself and getting over childhood insecurities.”

Taking advantage of the moment

“Because we live in a rare moment in history where the entire globe is accessible to a regular person like myself.

I feel like it would be an insult to all those who could have never even dreamed of traveling abroad if I didn’t see as much of the world as I could.”
