The 2023 Emmys took a detour into 2024! The award show was delayed as 11,000 television and movie writers went on strike in May last year.
Then tens of thousands of actors went on strike in July. The screenwriters called off their 148-day strike in late September, and the actors ratified their new deal with the studios in December.
Hosted by the charismatic Anthony Anderson, the ceremony unfolded with a mix of expected victories and delightful surprises, making it an evening to remember. Let’s dive into the five biggest moments that illuminated the 2024 Emmys.
1. Trailblazing Triumph for Ayo Edebiri & Quinta Brunson
In a historic moment, Ayo Edebiri and Quinta Brunson emerged as the first Black women to clinch both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy at the same Emmys.
Ayo’s heartfelt speech, expressed gratitude to her family and reflected on the journey of a child of immigrants pursuing comedy.
Quinta, moved to tears, acknowledged the significance of her win, emphasizing her love for comedy and gratitude for the opportunity to live her dream.
2. Pedro Pascal’s Playful Banter with Kieran Culkin
The Emmys weren’t just about accolades; they served as the stage for Pedro Pascal‘s witty retaliation against Kieran Culkin.
After a playful jab from Kieran toward Pedro at the Golden Globes, Pedro jokingly attributed his shoulder injury to Kieran’s fictional assault.
“I think tonight is a perfect time to tell everyone that Kieran Culkin beat the s— out of me,” Pedro said jokingly.
3. Anthony Anderson’s Mom Takes the Stage
Anthony Anderson had a Golden Globes to follow after Jo Koy’s controversial monologue.
Anthony enlisted his mother, Doris Hancox, to play the role of the music conductor for long-winded winners.
With a humorous twist, Anthony warned awardees that his mom would ensure acceptance speeches stayed concise.
“When you see my mama coming, just thank Jesus and your family, and wrap it up,” he said.
True to her word, Doris embraced her role as the timekeeper, notably interrupting Jennifer Coolidge, the first winner of the night.
Coolidge, accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “The White Lotus,” exceeded her allotted time.
Rising with a crossed-out clock sign, Mama Anderson signaled the end of time.
“I love you, baby, but time,” she said.
4. Princess Poppy’s Green Goblin Extravaganza
Reality TV star Princess Poppy stole the spotlight with her bold and unconventional Green Goblin look, turning heads on the Emmys red carpet.
Dressed in a head-to-toe green ensemble featuring pop culture references, Princess Poppy caused waves across social media as people tried to identify the goblin.
“I wanted to do the exact opposite of what is expected of you when you go to an event like this. I wanted to take decorum and turn it on its head,” Poppy told Entertainment Weekly.
Princess Poppy was there alongside the Season 15 cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race as the long standing show was nominated and later won the outstanding reality competition program.
5. Elton John Achieves EGOT Status
In a crowning career achievement, Elton John secured an EGOT by winning an Emmy for his outstanding variety special, “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.”
This coveted title recognizes individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony.
Elton John’s illustrious career and EGOT accomplishment marked a pinnacle moment, placing him among the esteemed few who have achieved this remarkable feat.
The rather elite club includes Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson and Viola Davis. Elton, 76, did not attend the Emmys ceremony.
The 2024 Emmys may have been delayed, but the moments etched in its timeline were nothing short of spectacular, blending talent, humor, and history on one glittering stage.
