The anticipation for the movie adaptation of the hit stage musical Wicked reached a fever pitch with the release of its first trailer during the 2024 Super Bowl.
However, the reaction from some film fans and social media users has been less than enthusiastic.
While Arianators are excited about seeing Ariana Grande in the upcoming movie, others were critical of the trailer.
Critics took to various platforms to voice their disappointment with the trailer, citing issues with lighting, color, and CGI effects.
Wicked’s first look
Some even compared it unfavorably to other blockbuster franchises like Harry Potter and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lamenting what they described as “CGI sludge” and “tacky action CGI shots.”
A particular point of contention was the appearance of film star Ariana Grande, with one Reddit user remarking that Ariana “looks very… Ariana,” raising concerns about her portrayal of the character Glinda the good witch.
“Ariana looks very… Ariana. I expected to see Glinda the good witch as a character and I can only see Ariana… I dont know if that makes sense….,” a Reddit user said.
Others commented about the actors’ ages and how they were portrayed on screen.
“Makeup did not do enough to make them look like students instead of their actual ages,” another Reddit user said.
Despite the backlash, some users acknowledged the potential of the film, particularly praising the casting choices of Erivo and Jonathan Bailey.
Arianators’ excitement for the movie
They expressed hope that the movie would capture the essence of the beloved musical and deliver memorable performances.
The tiny riff at the end of the trailer allowed Cynthia to let rip with her voice being praised by critics and fans.
While opinions remain divided, the teaser has sparked discussions about the adaptation’s direction and whether it will live up to the high expectations set by the original stage production.
As the release date approaches, fans and critics alike eagerly await further glimpses into the world of Wicked.
The movie, Wicked: Part One is set to release November 27, 2024 and features Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Michelle Yeoh.
