Airbnb is known and beloved for its inexpensive prices compared to other hotels as well as the opportunity to create your own hotel for others to stay in and make a little cash yourself.

But where there are cheap prices and convenience, there are also scammers. If you’re looking to book an Airbnb for a vacation, watch out for this scam!

Fake Airbnb listings

So, you found an Airbnb? It’s a really nice place, the price is cheap, the host seems courteous, and the beds look devoid of bed bugs and dried… fluids. Is it too good to be true?

Beware something that sounds way too good might just be a scam. The Airbnb may be on a property that doesn’t exist – or a property is owned by someone who doesn’t actually have the authority to list the spot you’ve discovered.

The scammer may use legitimate photos or hotels to trick you into paying for an Airbnb, but by the time you get there, they’d have run off with your money and you’re left high and dry.

There are many ways to avoid an Airbnb scam and save your time and money.

  1. Research the host and make sure they and their listing are legitimate.
  2. Do not take requests for money outside Airbnb’s secure payment system, as the company will be unable to find your payment if you get scammed.
  3. Only talk to the host through Airbnb’s messaging system; they can have a record of your arrangement and give you evidence to file a dispute.
