Are you constantly finding yourself in front of the fridge or pantry? If that’s the case, you might struggle to differentiate between genuine hunger symptoms and impulsive cravings.

It’s important to distinguish between the two, as it can have some unintended consequences, including weight gain, guilt and shame, decreased motivation, and digestive issues.

TikToker and licensed therapist Ryann Nicole gives us a simple, 15-second gut check to see if your decision for a snack break is actually a good one.

Hunger vs boredom test

When you find yourself with a craving, make your selection without hesitation.

Instead of taking the food to a place of comfort like a couch or in front of the television, put the items on an actual plate and sit down at a table.

If sitting down with your food on a plate feels annoying to you, you could just be listless.

If it feels like you prefer to eat somewhere else, but the table is actually fine, you’re probably genuinely hungry.

Ryann unfolds the psychology straightforwardly, stating, “No right or wrong, no good or bad, and if you figure out you’re bored, it doesn’t mean you can’t eat. It just means now you know what’s going on.”

So the next time you find yourself unsure whether you’re ravenous or plain bored, take the relaxed approach of this simple technique to discover your healthiest next step.
