The end of Gossip Girl worked out well for many characters of the show, but that wasn’t exactly the case for Lily van der Woodsen.
Lily was Serena and Eric‘s mother, and diehard fans at the show are still super upset about the way her storyline ended, even though the show came to a conclusion years ago.
Here’s why so many Gossip Girl viewers desperately wish that Lily‘s storyline had ended differently.
As a reminder, Lily’s storyline ended with her reconciling with her ex-husband, William van der Woodsen.
William convinced her she was still sick with cancer after she had already healed because he wanted to continue spending quality time with her as a way of coercing her out of her marriage with Rufus Humphrey.
Part of Williams plan included him secretly hooking up with Ivy Dickens so he could continue getting closer to Lily.
His entire plot to win Lily over was chaotic and insane. Yet, somehow it still worked out in his favor.
The fact that Lily ended up with him just doesn’t sit well with fans of the show.
Prior to Lily‘s reconciliation with William, she was married to Rufus. For a long stretch of time, it seemed that they were meant to be.
Many fans of the show wish that she could have just ended things as Rufus‘s wife, even if Serena and Dan also ended up together.
One social media user posted, “I said it before and I’ll say it again. Lily deserved a better ending. What the hell happened? She was my fave when the show started, and she still is now, but the writers made some very weird choices regarding her love life and her parenting style. She should have had the opportunity to end up with Rufus. What does everybody else think?”
Someone responded by saying, “Lily’s ending was very disappointing in my opinion. They butchered a lot of her character growth.”
A third fan added, “It was so frustrating to see Lily going through such a messy arc since I loved her character growth.“
Someone else joined the conversation to say, “I was gonna post the same thing. I was sad and disappointed she ended up with that conniving non-redeemable jerk. The same jerk that abandoned his kids when they were little, gave fake medicine, schemed with Ivy, and more. Lily would be definitely better off alone than with William, especially after five marriages.”
Ultimately, one of the most common responses on social media is that Lily and Rufus‘s marriage shouldn’t have gone down the drain the way it did.
Loads of fans agree that Lily definitely shouldn’t have ended up back in a marriage with someone as manipulative as William.
It’s obvious that the writers of the show needed to figure out how to butcher Rufus and Lily‘s marriage to leave the door open for Dan and Serena to be together, but did it really have to go down so horrendously?
