- Colorado tops the nation with 204 searches per 100,000 people for relationship trouble terms monthly
- New Jersey and New York trail behind with 191 and 188 searches per 100,000 people respectively
- “Couples therapy” beats “divorce lawyer” as the most-searched help term in the majority of states
Colorado residents search for relationship help more than any other state, according to shock findings from a new study.
The research by interactive tool Spin the Wheel Generator tracked Google searches for couples therapy, divorce lawyers, and other relationship issues across all 50 states to pinpoint where American romances are most on the rocks.
Colorado topped the charts with a staggering 12,000 monthly searches for relationship help, working out to 204.16 searches per 100,000 people – the highest rate nationwide and suggesting Rocky Mountain marriages face steeper challenges than their flatland counterparts.
New Jersey claimed second place with 191.11 searches per 100,000 residents, totaling 17,756 monthly searches across the Garden State and painting a picture of significant romantic trouble despite the region’s wealth.
New York landed third with 188.45 searches per 100,000 residents. The Empire State recorded the highest raw number of searches at 36,883 monthly – likely reflecting the notorious dating challenges and relationship pressures of big city life.
Utah placed fourth with 176.19 searches per 100,000 residents, amounting to 6,022 monthly searches – a surprisingly high ranking for America’s most religiously conservative state, where family values supposedly reign supreme yet couples still struggle enough to seek outside help.
Massachusetts residents ranked fifth highest for relationship trouble searches, logging 161.48 searches per 100,000 residents, totaling 11,306 monthly searches and showing particular interest in saving rather than ending troubled relationships.
Nevada ranked sixth with 160.50 searches per 100,000 residents, and stood as the only top-ten state where “divorce lawyer” outranked “couples therapy” as the most searched term – perfectly matching its reputation as America’s divorce destination.
Washington state residents made 12,317 monthly searches for relationship help, placing seventh nationally with 157.65 searches per 100,000 people in the Pacific Northwest.
Maryland ranked eighth with 157.45 searches per 100,000 residents, logging 9,731 monthly searches with couples therapy dominating the queries rather than divorce services.
North Carolina secured ninth place with 152.50 searches per 100,000 residents, totaling 16,524 monthly searches, and like Nevada, showed a preference for “divorce lawyer near me” searches – suggesting Tar Heel residents often skip reconciliation attempts in favor of separation.
Connecticut rounded out the top ten with 148.94 searches per 100,000 residents, with the state’s 5,388 monthly searches heavily focused on couples therapy and relationship-saving services rather than divorce options.

At the opposite end of the scale, South Dakota appeared to have America’s most content couples, with only 74.96 searches per 100,000 residents for relationship help – roughly a third of Colorado’s rate – and a total monthly search volume of just 689.
Mississippi and Arkansas followed with 84.87 and 84.97 searches per 100,000 residents respectively, both states showing dramatically lower interest in relationship help compared to the national average.
Louisiana ranked fourth from the bottom with 86.65 searches per 100,000 residents, while Alaska completed the bottom five with 87.83 searches per 100,000 residents.
Southern states dominate the lower end of the relationship-trouble rankings, potentially reflecting different social structures, stronger religious communities, fewer cost-of-living pressures, or cultural differences in how couples address relationship problems without turning to online resources.
The study also examined the most common search terms related to relationship troubles. In 38 states, “couples therapy” was the most frequently searched term, suggesting many Americans seek help before considering ending their relationships.
Divorce-related terms topped the list in just 12 states, with “divorce lawyer” leading in six states and “divorce lawyer near me” leading in six others – showing how different parts of America approach relationship difficulties.

David Lockard, creator of Spin the Wheel Generator, said: “The search data reveals interesting patterns about relationship health across different regions. States with higher costs of living and more urban environments tend to show higher search volumes for relationship help.
“What’s particularly noteworthy is that in most states, couples therapy searches outpace divorce-related searches, suggesting that many Americans try to repair relationships before ending them. The regional differences we see likely reflect economic pressures, cultural factors, and access to relationship services.
“The geography of relationship-help searches couldn’t be clearer, with western and northeastern states dominating the highest-search rankings, while midwestern and southern states made up 80% of the lowest-search locations – showing how attitudes toward relationship problems and solutions vary wildly across the country.”
