Let’s get something straight: safety is a right, not a privilege. And tbh, in 2025, it’s ridiculous we even have to say that out loud.

But here we are — still needing data to prove what should already be a global standard: women deserve to live without fear.

Thankfully, new research from Spartacus Law Firm breaks down which U.S. states are actually showing up for women… and which still need to get it TF together.

So, Where Are Women the Safest in the U.S.?

According to the study, New Jersey takes the crown as the safest state for women, thanks to strong protections, healthcare access, and some of the lowest violence rates in the country. Like, finally—somebody understood the assignment.

In fact, 7 out of the top 10 safest states are in the Northeast, with Delaware absolutely crushing it when it comes to the number of women’s shelters and advocacy groups per capita. Safe, supported, and seen? We love to see it.

Here’s a breakdown of what the study actually looked at (because we’re not just vibes — we do data):

  • Domestic violence
  • Rape cases
  • Trafficking
  • Femicide
  • Healthcare access
  • Number of shelters & advocacy orgs (all adjusted per 100k women)

Top 10 Safest States for Women, Ranked

10. Virginia

Strong insurance coverage (92.5%) + reliable shelter access = a solid support system. Even with its #10 spot, Virginia has the second-lowest domestic violence rate on this list. Quiet flex.

9. Alabama

A surprise? Maybe. But Alabama ranks ninth thanks to consistency, low trafficking numbers, and a decent number of women’s orgs. Women here report actually feeling safe walking alone at night — and that’s a big deal.

8. North Carolina

Support here is community-driven AF. Shelters are regionally funded, and women have access to real, personalized help. Even though the uninsured rate is higher, the structural support actually shows up when it matters.

7. Pennsylvania

Low rates of physical violence and nearly 94% of women insured? Yes, please. Pennsylvania’s vibe is: “We’ve got your back,” and tbh, we’re here for it.

6. New York

She’s big, she’s bold, and she’s built different. NY has a massive network of shelters and advocacy orgs. Plus, it has one of the lowest domestic violence rates nationwide. Big city energy with big safety stats to match.

5. Hawaii

Literal paradise, and not just for tourists. Hawaii boasts top-tier healthcare, strong state funding, and zero — yes, ZERO — reported trafficking cases. Mental + physical safety? Check and check.

4. Massachusetts

Home to the lowest femicide rate in the country. Add in almost universal insurance (97.2% coverage) and strong legal protections, and you’ve got a state that actually walks the walk.

3. Delaware

Two words: resource central. Delaware has the most shelters and women’s orgs per capita. Plus, one of the lowest rape case rates. Proof that when you give women access, you prevent violence.

2. Connecticut

With 1.59 women’s orgs per 100k women, CT is all about connection and prevention. Low domestic violence, low femicide — and high access. This is what solid infrastructure looks like.

1. New Jersey

Our #1 queen. Jersey leads with 91.6% insurance coverage, major protections, and some of the lowest rates of violence in the entire country. If you’re looking for what real safety feels like, NJ is the blueprint.

TL;DR?

  • Safety isn’t just about crime rates. It’s about access — to healthcare, shelters, support systems, and organizations that actually give a damn.
  • Northeast states are winning, with Jersey, CT, and Delaware topping the list.
  • We’ve still got work to do — but this data gives us a clear look at what’s working (and what we should demand more of).

We’ll say it louder for the people in the back: women deserve to feel safe, supported, and protected — everywhere. Not just in some states. Not just sometimes. Always.
