From the flightless Kiwi Bird, to having more sheep than there are people, there is so much to experience.
The major city in New Zealand is Auckland, with a population of 1.7 million people. However, there are many other lovable small towns throughout the country that are worth exploring.
Here are two you should know about.
Cromwell
Just outside of the major city of Queenstown is the town of Cromwell, population 7,010. This is a historic gold rush town, and was established by the gold miners of the time.
This is the perfect place for trying fresh stone fruit, biking through the Cromwell trails or having a picnic at Lake Dunstan.
Old Cromwell is also a point of interest, and features many chic cafes and adorable boutiques.
If the trip is from October to April, there is a weekly farmers market and craft fair. This small city has lots of activity.
Waihi
With a population of 5,150, Waihi is one small town. However, it is actually the home of the richest gold mine in New Zealand history.
One way to explore this scenic and historic town is by bike riding the Hauraki Rail Trail. For a lovely beach day, there is Waihi Beach, perfect for relaxing on the sandy shores.
There are restaurants with views of the sea, or intimate garden locations, with everything from luxury, to cozy and quaint.
The city center is recently revived and ready to host people from around the world.
