There is so much to love and adore about a country like New Zealand. The island country, located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, is divine.

There’s a reason 5.123 million people call it their home today! Here are three amazing small towns to consider visiting in New Zealand.

Reefton

Reefton is known as the town of light, because it was the first city in the South Islands to have electricity.

This is a relaxed town, featuring the Reefton Distilling Co, Black Points Museum, and The Reefton Cinema. There are opportunities to pan for gold, fish or hunt, or go white water rafting.

The Reefton walkway is a 40 minute loop that allows for a wonderful view of the city. Once the exploring is over there are cafes available to grab a coffee or hot chocolate.

Just outside of Reefton there are natural hot springs at Springs Junction.

Akaroa

Want a place that has rare dolphins, beautiful lighthouses and a home for giants? Then Akaroa is the place to be.

Hector’s dolphins can sometimes be spotted when on a harbor cruise. This is also the home to Little Blue Penguins.

There is much to uncover in this town of 624 people. When it comes to fine dining, Akaroa is known for its French cuisine.

Notable restaurants include The Little Bistro, The Brasserie Kitchen and Bar, and the Mandala Restaurant. This city is 90 minutes from Christchurch, and well worth the visit.

Hokitika

Hokitika is known as a “Cool Little Town” and the name means “place of return.”

This town is full of adventure with opportunities to zip line, go glacier rafting or simply take a scenic drive. With only 2,860 residents it is definitely small but also full of history.

Hokitika is famous for its pounamu, also known as greenstones. They serve as a wonderful token for anyone who travels through.

This little town is also home to the National Kiwi Centre, home to giant eels and the nocturnal Kiwi bird.
