Summer’s here, flights are booked, outfits are packed… but your brain’s already spiraling about takeoff? You’re not alone — up to 40% of people feel some kind of flight anxiety.
We got the Helen Wells, Clinical Director at The Dawn Rehab Thailand, to drop five game-changing hacks so you can actually enjoy your vacay instead of white-knuckling it through the clouds.

1️⃣ Master the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Trick
When your brain’s in full panic mode, this sensory exercise yanks you back into the present:
- 5 things you can see (the cabin lights, a cute flight attendant, the seat pattern)
- 4 things you can touch (armrest, your hoodie, your phone case)
- 3 things you can hear (engine hum, announcements, baby crying — sorry)
- 2 things you can smell (food cart, hand lotion)
- 1 thing you can taste (gum, coffee, in-flight pretzels)
2️⃣ Sit Over the Wings for Less Bumpiness
Turbulence girlies — this is your sweet spot. The ride’s smoother here than in the front or back. Bonus: you’re closer to the exits if you like that peace of mind.
3️⃣ Eat Before You Fly
Nerves + airplane food = not the vibe. A solid pre-flight meal can keep your stomach settled and your mood steady.
4️⃣ Sleep Through the Stress
Pack a travel pillow, noise-cancelling headphones, and an eye mask. Add deep breathing to the mix and you might actually wake up mid-flight like, “Oh… we’re already landing?”
5️⃣ Pre-Load Your Calm
Whether it’s guided meditations (Headspace, Calm), progressive muscle relaxation, or a little lavender oil dabbed on your wrists, get your zen on before the panic even starts.
💬 Helen says:
“By trying different strategies, you’ll find what works for you — and with practice, you can transform flying from a stress fest into just another fun part of your trip.”
